About this role
Government Project Manager, Newcastle
Perfect role for a senior professional looking to grow their Defence & Government career in Newcastle.
Government project delivery in the north east has picked up pace, and defence-adjacent programmes in particular need people who can hold a complex plan together under scrutiny. This is a fast-growing startup working across Defence & Government contracts, small enough that every hire still shapes how things get done, ambitious enough that the work carries real weight. If you want ownership rather than a seat in a big hierarchy, this Government Project Manager role is worth a proper look.
Here's what you'll be doing
Running Defence & Government projects end to end, from scoping through to delivery and sign-off
Managing budgets, timelines and risk registers, and flagging issues before they become problems
Acting as the main point of contact for government stakeholders and internal delivery teams
Coordinating cross-functional input from technical, commercial and compliance colleagues
Preparing reports and briefings for senior stakeholders, written clearly enough that non-specialists can follow them
Building the project management processes as you go, since the team is still young and things aren't fully set in stone yet
Here are the skills you'll need
Solid track record delivering projects within Defence & Government or a similarly regulated sector
Working knowledge of PRINCE2, Agile or an equivalent project management framework
Comfortable managing budgets and reporting to senior or governmental stakeholders
Clear communicator, equally at ease in a technical workshop or a board update
Able to work independently and make calls without waiting for permission at every step
Security clearance eligibility (existing SC or DV clearance is a strong plus, though not always essential)
Key perks and benefits
£51,500 to £67,500, depending on experience
Hybrid working, based from Newcastle with flexibility on office days
Equity in the business, so you share in what you help build
Flexible hours and a genuinely remote-friendly culture
A learning and development budget to spend on courses, certifications or conferences
Why pursue a career in Defence & Government?
Defence & Government work rarely stands still. Budgets shift, priorities change, and the projects that get funded tend to matter beyond the balance sheet. Newcastle has built up a real cluster of defence and public sector activity in recent years, and a Government Project Manager who delivers well here won't struggle for options. Good people get noticed fast in this sector, and progression tends to follow.
