About this role
We are looking for professional, flexible, and reliable Security Cover Officers to join our committed hospital security team.
Hospitals are busy, high-pressure places where the safety of patients, clinical staff, and visitors is most important. As a Cover Officer, you will provide essential support across different shifts—covering planned leave, sickness, and operational needs. You will be a reassuring, visible presence across the site, calming difficult situations and ensuring a secure, supportive environment for NHS staff to deliver care safely.
Key Duties
-
Visible Presence & Patrolling
Carry out internal and external patrols across hospital wards, Emergency Departments (A&E), and grounds.
-
Conflict Management & De-escalation
Respond quickly to alarms, incident calls, and requests for help, using verbal de-escalation and approved physical intervention techniques when needed.
-
Emergency Response
Help during critical incidents, fire alarms, major incidents, and missing person alerts (e.g., vulnerable patient wandering).
-
Incident Reporting
Write clear, accurate, and factual incident reports, log entries, and statements for management and law enforcement review.
-
CCTV & Equipment
Monitor CCTV systems, use two-way radio professionally, and carry out routine security equipment checks.
-
Compliance & Professional Standards
Maintain high standards of personal appearance, strict adherence to site Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) hygiene guidelines, and confidentiality regarding patient data (GDPR/Data Protection).
Essential
-
Valid SIA Licence
Door Supervision (DS) or Security Guarding (SG) licence.
-
Flexibility
Genuine availability and willingness to work 12-hour shifts covering both days, nights, and weekends on a rotational/relief basis.
-
Communication Skills
Excellent interpersonal skills with the empathy to communicate with distressed patients and the authority to handle aggressive behaviour professionally.
-
Conflict Resolution
Proven experience in managing conflict calmly, confidently, and tactfully.
-
Documentation Skills
Good written English for formal logs and legal incident reports.
-
Right to Work
Proof of right to work in the UK and satisfactory vetting/screening (including standard 5-year background history and enhanced DBS check).
