About this role

The role of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is integral to the medical assessment,

management and referral of patients presenting to the emergency department at Newham

University Hospital.

Our Emergency Department’s ACPs are embedded as an integral part of the emergency medical team, working alongside physician associates, doctors in training, clinical fellows and consultants to form a multidisciplinary medical team. The ACP shares the

same responsibilities and opportunities as the equivalent Dr (at ST1 level or higher)

As part of the multidisciplinary medical team the post holder will provide clinical expertise towards developing and enhancing the clinical service. The post holder will demonstrate advanced skills and competencies and ensure that evidence-based practice is inherent in all

aspects of care and treatment. Working within the multidisciplinary team following local and nationally agreed protocols and guidelines, the advanced clinical practitioner exercises independent judgement under supervision to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement

and evaluate the clinical care and management of Emergency Department patients. They work alongside and support the education and development of medical, nursing and AHP colleagues

The Newham University Hospital Emergency Medicine ACP development program

is split into four key stages

•

Stage 1

Newly qualified ACP; (Band 7)

Formative stage; working at a level equivalent to F2. Focused on gaining further training and experience in a close support / supervision environment. It is expected that applicants for this post will have completed this stage of their development

•

Stage 2

Experienced ACP; (Band 8a) Transition stage; Focused on consolidation of clinical experience, transitioning to a

supervising and leading role. Working at ST1-2 level.

  • Stage 3 RCEM accredited ACP; (Band 8a) Career stage (All ACPs are expected to progress to this stage);

Working at ST3+ registrar level. Focused on clinical care, supervising MDT clinical care, leading clinical arrears within the emergency department.

•

Stage 4

Senior ACP; (Band 8b+) Higher professional development stage; for individual ACPs who desire further

development beyond stage 3. Development may be within clinical expertise working towards consultant equivalency or managerial. Development beyond stage 3 is as opportunities arise.

NB Stage requirements are in addition to the “minimum short listable person specifications”
