About this role
Join a enterprise Technology company as a Junior Software Engineer in Reading.
Enterprise software teams in the UK are under constant pressure to modernise legacy systems while shipping new features at pace, and that's exactly the environment this Junior Software Engineer role sits in. This is a genuine opportunity to learn from engineers who've built large-scale platforms before, inside a Technology business that has the processes and mentoring structure to back up its size. You won't be thrown in the deep end. You'll be given a proper foundation.
Here's what you'll be doing
Write, test and maintain code across existing applications, following established coding standards and review processes
Fix bugs, investigate issues and support senior engineers on larger feature builds
Take part in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback
Contribute to sprint planning and stand-ups as part of a structured agile team
Write unit tests and help maintain documentation as systems evolve
Work alongside QA, product and design colleagues to get releases out the door properly
Here are the skills you'll need
A degree in Computer Science, a coding bootcamp, or equivalent self-taught experience with a portfolio to show for it
Working knowledge of at least one modern programming language (Java, C#, Python or JavaScript are all useful here)
Understanding of version control, ideally Git
A genuine curiosity about how large systems fit together, and the patience to learn why they're built that way
Clear communication skills. You'll need to explain a problem to a non-technical colleague at some point
Willingness to take feedback on code and act on it without taking it personally
Key perks and benefits
£26,000 to £34,500 depending on experience
Hybrid working, split between home and the Reading office
Private medical and dental insurance from day one
Enhanced pension scheme and performance-based bonuses
Structured career development with a clear path beyond Junior Software Engineer
Why pursue a career in Technology?
Technology remains one of the few sectors where junior talent gets genuine room to grow, and the demand for good engineers isn't slowing down anytime soon. Reading has quietly become one of the stronger tech hubs outside London, with a concentration of enterprise employers that makes it a sensible base for someone starting out. Good engineers who put the graft in early tend to find the rest of their career takes care of itself.
This Junior Software Engineer opportunity is brought to you by The Opportunity Hub UK.
