About this role
An exceptional opportunity for a mid-level AWS/Azure Security Engineer to shape the future of Cybersecurity in Southampton.
Cloud breaches rarely come from a single dramatic failure. They come from a misconfigured bucket, an over-permissioned role, a patch that slipped a month. The company behind this role is an established and growing cybersecurity SME, the kind that's built its name on catching those gaps before clients ever see the consequences. As more businesses push critical workloads into AWS and Azure, the demand for engineers who understand both platforms properly, not just one with a passing knowledge of the other, keeps climbing.
Here's what you'll be doing
Design and implement security controls across AWS and Azure environments, covering IAM, network segmentation, and encryption at rest and in transit
Monitor cloud infrastructure for threats using native tools (GuardDuty, Sentinel, Security Hub) and respond to incidents as they arise
Carry out configuration reviews and remediate vulnerabilities before they become headlines
Build and maintain security automation using Infrastructure as Code, so controls get deployed consistently rather than bolted on afterwards
Support audits and compliance work against frameworks like ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, or SOC 2
Work closely with DevOps and engineering teams to bake security into the pipeline rather than checking it at the end
Here are the skills you'll need
Solid hands-on experience securing workloads in both AWS and Azure, not just certifications on paper
Working knowledge of security tooling
SIEM platforms, vulnerability scanners, WAFs, and cloud-native monitoring services
Scripting ability in Python, PowerShell, or similar, for automating repetitive security tasks
A genuine understanding of networking fundamentals and how attackers actually move through environments
The confidence to explain a technical risk to a non-technical stakeholder without losing them halfway through
Relevant certifications are welcome (AWS Security Specialty, Azure Security Engineer, CompTIA Security+) but practical judgement matters more
Key perks and benefits
Salary of £51,000 to £71,500, depending on experience
Hybrid working, with flexibility built around how the team actually operates, not just a policy on paper
Private medical insurance and a solid pension contribution
Structured career development, including support for further certifications
Generous annual leave and a genuinely flexible approach to work-life balance
Why pursue a career in Cybersecurity?
Every organisation now runs on cloud infrastructure, and every one of them needs people who can secure it properly. Cybersecurity pays well because the stakes are real, and the skills you build in a role like this transfer anywhere. Southampton has become a genuine hub for tech and cybersecurity talent on the south coast, with none of the overheads of London and plenty of the opportunity.
