About this role
As a Cover Supervisor, you'll supervise lessons during short-term teacher absence, using work that's already been prepared.
One period could be English, The next might be geography, science or history. You don't need specialist knowledge of every subject. You need to be able to understand the instructions, communicate them clearly and manage the room.
You'll
- Supervise classes during teacher absence
- Introduce and explain the work provided
- Keep pupils focused and on task
- Reinforce the school's behaviour expectations
- Respond appropriately to low-level disruption
- Support pupils who need clarification
- Ensure work is completed as far as possible
- Record relevant information for the class teacher
- Follow school safeguarding and behaviour procedures
- Provide additional school support where required
Because that's the real skill. You won't necessarily know every pupil. They won't necessarily know you. And occasionally, they'll want to establish exactly how much they can get away with.
You'll need to be approachable without becoming their mate, confident without being confrontational and consistent without turning every minor issue into a battle.
Previous experience with children or young people would be useful, particularly within
Schools | Youth Work | Coaching | Mentoring | Tutoring | Alternative Provision | Behaviour Support
Existing Cover Supervisors and Teaching Assistants looking for a different role are also encouraged to apply.
Cover supervision can also provide valuable experience if you're considering a future career in teaching.
You'll gain first-hand exposure to
- Secondary classroom management
- Different subjects and year groups
- School behaviour systems
- Working with teachers and pastoral teams
- The realities of managing a classroom
And you'll discover fairly quickly whether standing in front of a class is something you enjoy.
This part-time opportunity pays £110-£130 per day, depending on experience.
It could suit someone looking for school-based work that fits around other commitments, an experienced education professional wanting greater flexibility, or someone looking to build classroom experience before taking their next career step.
You don't need to know every answer.
But you do need the confidence to take charge of the room while pupils work theirs out.
