About this role

The best behaviour support often happens before there's a behaviour to manage.

A pupil goes quiet.

Their attention disappears. Their body language changes. They start looking for a reason to leave the room.

Someone who knows that young person well may recognise those signs long before the situation escalates.

That's the kind of SEMH Behaviour Mentor we're looking for in Fakenham.

This role is about helping young people understand what they're experiencing, develop better ways of managing difficult situations and gradually become more able to participate in education.

This isn't purely a classroom Teaching Assistant position and it isn't simply about responding to challenging behaviour.

You'll work individually and with small groups of young people who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, providing a combination of mentoring, learning support and targeted pastoral intervention.

A typical day could involve helping a pupil settle into school, supporting someone who's struggling to remain in a lesson, delivering a planned intervention or talking through an incident once the young person is calm enough to reflect on it.

You'll also

  • Build consistent professional relationships with pupils
  • Identify triggers and early signs of dysregulation

-

Deliver targeted 1

1 and small-group interventions

  • Reinforce agreed behaviour-support strategies
  • Help pupils develop emotional awareness and coping strategies
  • Support re-engagement following incidents
  • Encourage participation in learning
  • Work with teachers to remove barriers within the classroom
  • Share observations with pastoral, SEND and therapeutic colleagues
  • Record interventions and relevant pupil information appropriately

You may already work as a Behaviour Mentor, Pastoral Support Worker or SEMH Teaching Assistant.

But we'd also be interested in relevant experience from

Youth work | Alternative provision | Residential care | Children's services | Family support | Mentoring | Community work

What's important is that you've worked directly with young people who can find relationships, boundaries, emotional regulation or education difficult.

You'll need to be able to remain calm when someone else isn't.

That means not taking behaviour personally, knowing when to intervene, understanding when a pupil needs space and maintaining boundaries even after a difficult interaction.

You'll also need

  • A good understanding of SEMH
  • Experience using positive behaviour-support strategies
  • Strong communication skills
  • Confidence delivering individual interventions
  • The ability to establish rapport without becoming overfamiliar
  • Resilience and adaptability
  • A collaborative approach to working with other professionals

This role pays £110 per day and offers the possibility of developing into a permanent position.

For the right person, it's an opportunity to become part of a team supporting young people over time - not simply managing individual incidents, but helping pupils develop strategies that make those incidents less frequent in the first place.

If you understand the difference between managing behaviour and understanding it, we'd like to hear from you.
