A specialist SEND school on the edge of Totnes is looking for a Science Teacher, and Luma Education Recruitment is supporting the search. Your classes will be small and mixed in age, covering primary and secondary pupils who learn at a much slower pace than their peers. Science here means doing rather than reading: growing seeds, testing materials, mixing, measuring and talking about what happened, then coming back to it until it sticks. Secondary science specialists and primary teachers with a strong science interest are both welcome to apply.

The Setting

The school is a small, rural specialist provision in South Devon for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Staff take a relational, therapeutic approach, so getting to know each pupil well comes before anything else. Outdoor education, life skills and vocational routes sit alongside classroom subjects, and the school is FASD-informed.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Delivering science lessons to small classes of primary and secondary-aged pupils with lower attainment
  • Using hands-on experiments, visuals and sensory materials to make each topic concrete
  • Planning in short, repeated steps and adjusting the pace for individual learners
  • Making use of the outdoors for topics such as living things, seasons and forces
  • Recording small steps of progress against each pupil's individual targets
  • Planning alongside teaching assistants, therapists and pastoral staff
  • Keeping routines calm and predictable so pupils feel secure in lessons

What We're Looking For

  • Experience teaching children or young people with SEND
  • The ability to adapt science for learners working at entry level or below key stage expectations
  • QTS preferred; unqualified teachers and instructors with strong SEND science experience will also be considered
  • A relational, consistent and calm style in the classroom

This suits a patient, nurturing teacher who is happy to try a different approach when the first one doesn't land.
