About this role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant Physician to join our General Medicine/Outliers team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing high-quality care for general medical patients, with a particular focus on the management of medical outliers across the Trust.

Working as part of a supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care, helping to optimise patient flow, improve outcomes, and enhance the patient experience. The post offers opportunities to support service development, quality improvement, teaching, and clinical leadership.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated clinician who is passionate about delivering exceptional general medical care and helping to shape innovative models of care within a forward-thinking organisation.

  • Providing high-quality consultant-led care for patients including those placed in outlying wards across the Trust.
  • Undertaking regular ward rounds and clinical reviews to ensure timely assessment, treatment planning, and discharge decision-making.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient flow, reduce length of stay, and support safe discharge pathways.
  • Providing senior clinical leadership for the management of deteriorating and complex medical patients.
  • Supporting the delivery of care across medical outlier areas, ensuring patients receive care equivalent to that provided within specialty wards.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) is at the heart of acute and specialist care for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We care for a population of around 470,000 people, a number that rises significantly during peak visitor seasons. We employ around 6,700 staff, united by a shared commitment to deliver safe, high‑quality care. We provide services across three main hospital sites, with around 780 inpatient beds:

  • Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro
  • St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle
  • West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance

As a teaching hospital, we are proud to work in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School, the University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School, supporting the next generation of health professionals while continually strengthening our own services
