About this role

Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting for a Teaching Assistant to join a supportive specialist SEN school in Newton Abbot, Devon.

This is an excellent opportunity for a caring, reliable and resilient individual who is passionate about supporting children and young people with SEND and additional needs.

You will work closely with teachers and the wider education team, providing one-to-one and small-group support to help pupils access learning, develop confidence and build greater independence.

The role would suit someone with experience in education, care, youth work, health and social care or a similar people-focused environment, although previous school experience is not essential for the right candidate.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils both in and outside the classroom, helping them overcome barriers to learning and providing consistent encouragement and positive role modelling.

You may support pupils with SEND, emotional needs, complex trauma and behavioural challenges, adapting your approach to meet individual needs.

  • Support pupils with their learning on a one-to-one and small-group basis.
  • Work closely with teachers to deliver engaging and individualised learning activities.
  • Provide pastoral, emotional and behavioural support where required.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, confidence, resilience and independence.
  • Help pupils develop communication, social and practical life skills.
  • Follow individual education and support plans.
  • Support pupils who may display challenging or distressed behaviour.
  • Monitor engagement and progress and provide feedback to teachers.
  • Promote a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Work effectively as part of a dedicated SEN team.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and report any concerns appropriately.

You don't necessarily need previous experience as a Teaching Assistant. Personality, attitude and the ability to build positive relationships with young people are equally important.

We are looking for someone who is

  • Caring, patient and empathetic.
  • Calm and consistent when supporting challenging behaviour.
  • Confident working with children and young people with additional needs.
  • Reliable, resilient and committed.
  • A strong communicator and team player.
  • Proactive and able to use their own initiative.
  • Passionate about helping pupils achieve their potential.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
  • Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals is desirable.
  • Enhanced DBS clearance, or willingness to obtain one, prior to starting.

A qualification or experience in Teaching Assistance, SEN, Health & Social Care, Youth Work, Education, Childcare or a similar field would be beneficial but is not essential.

Training and ongoing support will be provided.

  • £100-£110 per day, depending on experience.
  • Full-time hours.
  • Temporary-to-permanent opportunities.
  • Supportive specialist SEN school environment.
  • Training and ongoing professional support.
  • Opportunity to develop a long-term career in specialist education.
  • Dedicated consultant support from Luma Education Recruitment.
