Overview
We’re hiring an Apprentice Tax Accountant to join the Operational Finance team at Screwfix, with responsibilities across our UK and Republic of Ireland businesses This is a fantastic opportunity to start or grow your career in tax and accountancy while studying towards a professional qualification in a fast-paced, supportive and growing business.
You’ll play a key role in supporting the Tax and Operational Finance teams across a range of activities including VATcorporate and income tax compliance, reporting and financial analysis, gaining hands-on experience across the finance function.
Working closely with colleagues across Finance, Payroll and Accounts Payable, you’ll help gather and analyse data, support tax return preparation, contribute to internal controls compliance and assist with identifying opportunities to improve processes and ways of working.
This role offers excellent exposure to operational and commercial finance, giving you the opportunity to build strong stakeholder relationships and develop a broad understanding of how finance supports the wider business. It also offers the opportunity to be involved in our business transformation project as we implement new EPR systems.
Alongside on-the-job learning, you’ll receive supported study towards an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or Association of Tax Technicians (ATT) qualification, helping you build a strong foundation for a long-term career in tax and finance.
This role is hybrid working from our Yeovil Head Office. Applicants will be expected to work in Yeovil for 3 days per week and at other times as required by our reporting cycles.

Key responsibilities
- Support the preparation of VAT and Corporate Tax returns, budgets and cashflow forecasts
- Work with Operational and Commercial Finance teams to obtain and analyse data to support tax reporting and compliance activities
- Assist with reviewing payroll and expense data for VAT and income tax compliance, including annual taxable benefit calculations
- Support monthly tax accounting processes, balance sheet reconciliations and internal controls compliance
- Assist with product VAT and duty classifications
- Conduct tax research and support the maintenance and improvement of tax procedures
- Prepare presentations and internal training materials
- Build strong relationships across Operational Finance and wider business teams to support end-to-end process improvements
- Support internal and external audits where required
- Assist the wider Finance team with ad-hoc tasks and projects
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and ways of working as part of continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure compliance with Group Financial Reporting requirements and internal controls
Required skills & experience
- Graduate or educated to A-Level standard with at least 3 A-Levels, including Maths and English GCSEs at grade 4/C or above
- Strong attention to detail with an analytical and data-focused mindset
- Good Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
- Interest in finance, tax and data analysis
- Power BI, Power Query or similar experience would be advantageous
- Interest in using AI tools to improve analysis and efficiency
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Able to prioritise tasks and produce accurate work under pressure
- Self-motivated with a proactive approach to learning and development
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and identifying solutions to problems
