Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust • Norwich NR4 7UY

Consultant in Otolaryngology (Paediatric Otolaryngology)

About this role

A Vacancy at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Applications are invited for a full time (10PA) replacement post for a retiring consultant based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH). We are interested in candidates that have undergone a comprehensive ear, nose and throat training and who have an interest in Paediatric Otolaryngology. A fellowship in Paediatric Otolaryngology would be desirable but not essential, since we would support development in Paediatric ENT, particularly complex Paediatric ENT.

The ENT Departments based at NNUH and the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH) have recently been joined under the Norfolk and Waveney Acute Services Integration Project (ASIP) with NNUH being appointed as the lead provider. It is expected that there will be increasing collaboration of ENT service covering the Norfolk and Waveney area.

The Paediatric ENT service manages both general and subspecialist Ear, Nose and Throat conditions and is supported by a full range of audiological services. We provide specialist care for rare and complex conditions, including surgery for choanal atresia, upper airway disorders, chronic ear disease, bone-anchored hearing aids, and neck lumps.

The new appointee will play a key role in the investigation and management of neonates and children diagnosed with permanent sensorineural hearing loss through the neonatal hearing screening programme, and will be an active member of the Cleft Palate team. In addition, the post-holder will be expected to contribute to the development of a tertiary-level Paediatric ENT service, strengthening our regional provision for complex and highly specialised care.

The combined ENT services currently consist of 10 WTE Consultants, 4 Registrars, 3 Staff Grades, 2 ENT Core Surgical Trainees, 2 Junior Teaching Fellows, 1 Junior Clinical Fellow along with 4 GP and Foundation Trainees.

The current consultants with an interest in Paediatric

Otolaryngology at the NNUH are

  • Mr John Phillips
  • Mr Alfred Addison

The appointee is expected to fully participate in the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum for ENT at the University of East Anglia (UEA) School of Medicine. A clinical or basic science research role is also encouraged.

The appointee will be participating in a 1 in 8 weekday on-calls, and 1 in 11 weekends on-call.
