About this role
We are seeking a dynamic, full-time substantive consultant gastroenterologist with a subspeciality interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
You will join a team of fourteen gastroenterologists at West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who enjoy working together and supporting each other.
You should be a competent clinician and endoscopist with a CCT in gastroenterology and general medicine and experience working within the NHS. To complement our team, you should demonstrate interest in managing complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease. We have a dynamic IBD team with five experienced IBD nurse specialists, regular MDT meetings and close links to our colorectal colleagues. We are seeking to expand our team to manage our demand, develop new treatment pathways and increase our research portfolio for the benefit of our patients.
This post has 10 programmed activities. There is a 1:14 on call rota for weekend and weekday put of hours gastroenterology cover and 1:7 rota for ward cover.
We are looking for the prospective candidate to start as soon as possible.
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the smooth running, governance, and further development of the
IBD service including
- Independent care of patients with complex IBD
- Actively lead and contribute to IBD MDTs
- Support and training of the IBD nurses
- Foster close teamworking within the IBD team
- Developing IBD care pathways
- Support networking with internal and external providers
- Support IBD data collection/ audit and database
- Implement national policies and guidance and local GIRFT recommendations relating to IBD care
- Develop departmental IBD research portfolio
- Maintain appropriate CPD
- Endoscopy (Elective, training, and inpatient emergency)
- Outpatient work (clinics, referral vetting, GP advice and guidance)
- Inpatient work (Consultant of the week to cover GI ward, Ward referrals)
- Weekend work (6 hours on site and emergency endoscopy) 1 week in 14
You will be expected to be able to travel to all three Trust hospital Sites (Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans Hospital).
You will take part in clinical governance and clinical risk management, and in their implementation, including audit.
A new hospital has been planned for Watford. A new four roomed Endoscopy Unit at St Albans has been planned with a completion date of 2026.
