We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Respiratory Trust Resident Doctor with a special interest in Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Pleural Disease to join our dynamic and supportive Respiratory team.
This post provides excellent exposure to both acute and specialist respiratory medicine, with opportunities to develop advanced skills in pleural procedures, thoracic ultrasound, and ILD management within a well-established multidisciplinary team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality patient care across inpatient and outpatient settings, while contributing to service development, teaching, and quality improvement.
On-Call Commitments in Respiratory service
1 weekday evening per week: 17:00 – 21:00
1 weekend in 6: 09:00 – 17:00
You will be part of a supportive and collaborative Respiratory department committed to high-quality patient care, education, and service development.
This role provides an excellent platform for trainees aiming to pursue a career in Respiratory Medicine, particularly those with an interest in ILD and Pleural.
With a new hospital planned for Watford, work underway to update theatres at St Albans City Hospital and plans for a neighbourhood healthcare centre in Hemel Hempstead, this is an exciting time to join us.

Provide senior clinical support in acute and general respiratory medicine, including ward rounds and on-call duties
Assess and manage a wide range of respiratory conditions, including respiratory failure, pneumonia, COPD exacerbations, ILD, and pleural disease
Support inpatient referrals and contribute to ambulatory and same-day emergency care pathways
Participate in outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
Gain dedicated experience in ILD clinics and MDT discussions
Develop expertise in pleural disease, including pleural aspiration and chest drain insertion
Build competency in thoracic ultrasound and pleural procedures
You will support the Respiratory ward through regular patient reviews, including management of patients requiring escalation to higher levels of respiratory support such as:
Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV)
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
High-Flow Nasal Oxygen
The management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the Clinical Leaf for Respiratory Medicine, Dr Matthew J Knight
