- Provide visible, compassionate and professional nursing leadership across Surgical Specialties.
- Lead on the delivery of high-quality, safe and person-centred care and support continuous improvement.
- Support, develop and motivate ward, department and specialist nursing teams to achieve their best.
- Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver operational performance and effective patient flow.
- Oversee quality, governance, patient experience and service development within the directorate.
- Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, education and the effective use of resources.

- Oversee the standard of care delivery within the directorate and develop strategies to address issues as they arise.
- Ensure the safe, efficient and effective delivery of care across the directorate.
- Responsible for ensuring that clinical standards are delivered in line with national, regional and local policies, e.g. National Service Frameworks, Essence of Care clinical benchmarking, dissemination and implementation of best practice.
- Monitor the implementation of Standards for Better Health within their directorate, e.g. Clinical Governance and Public Health agendas.
- To ensure that policies and guidelines are implemented and evaluated within the speciality and directorate.
- Adhere to the NMC’s professional regulations and ensure that nursing staff practice within the regulatory framework.
- Develop, review and evaluate patient information for the directorate/division.
- Provide assistance in clinical areas, as required.
