About this role

  • Provide Clinical Site and Bed Management services for C&W when on duty (cross site cover)
  • Initiate the agreed procedures for the safe, appropriate and effective use of the Trusts bed capacity for emergency and elective admissions.
  • Provide senior nursing and managerial support and expert advice to all staff out of hours and undertake advanced patient assessment and clinical interventions.
  • Co-ordinate and participate in the Trusts response teams to fire, security alerts, cardiac arrests and other clinical emergencies and be responsible for first line management of major and serious untoward incidents.
  • Co-ordinate the hospital night team and the Hospital by Day team when developed
  • Provide clinical leadership and operational management Trust wide as the post holder is the most senior nurse on site out of hours.
  • Operate the Trust Bed Management policy and procedures to co-ordinate the effective admission, transfer and discharge of all emergency, urgent and elective patients. Co-ordinate the transfer of patients through the inpatient system to allow for sufficient capacity and the safe and appropriate placement of admissions whilst maintaining NHS targets.
  • Maintain an accurate bed state, monitor actual/potential occupancy and contribute to the collection of data with analysis of directorate performance.
  • Maintain data of all outliers, side room activity and prioritise accordingly.
  • Identify issues which prevent the safe and effective management of admissions and seek solutions in order to resolve them.
  • Monitor trigger factors associated with, and where necessary implement the Bed Escalation Policy to minimise bed crises through effective planning for the safe and efficient use of the hospitals bed stock.
  • Maintain robust communication networks between Discharge Liaison nurses, Discharge Lounge staff, community care agencies and the relevant voluntary agencies to support timely effective patient discharge.
  • Liaise closely with the Infection Prevention and Control Team to ensure containment of infectious diseases.
  • Liaise with external Bed/Clinical Site Managers to coordinate patient repatriations and transfers and undertaking escalation where necessary.
  • Provide information regarding bed usage to the General Manager Operations which assists in intelligent bed management.

  • The post holder has overall responsibility for clinical site management and for overseeing the management of the hospital out of hours
  • Ensure the smooth, efficient and effective operation of the Trust when on duty
  • To communicate pertinent site management issues to relevant senior managers and on-call executives and act as management representative out of hours to all staff
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills in the clinical and organisational settings
  • To safeguard the interests of the Trust by reporting problems/issues relating to the hospital site where Health & Safety may be at ris
  • Liaise with security managers and Press Office and on behalf of the Trust with external agencies such as the Police
  • Reception and management of persons out of hours attending/contacting the hospital wishing to lodge a complaint and handling and resolving these complaints accordance with C&W policy
  • Ensure that all clinical and legal documents are completed accurately, appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Reception, filing, tracing and transferring of Mental Health Act ‘section’ papers in accordance with agreed procedures
  • Understand the disciplinary procedure and be able to initiate first line action where necessar
  • Act as the responsible manager on behalf of the Trust under the A&E Coordination protocol
  • Escalate any potential serious untoward incident to the executive on call
  • Triage and manage all requests for temporary staffing and coordinate deployment of staff out of hours
  • In supporting Clinical Nurse Leads/ Matrons, the post holder is responsible for making optimum use of manpower and resources to support the delivery of a high quality service
  • Provide adequate and consistent CSM cover on a rotational basis and maintain a robust handover between CSMs
  • To deputise for the General Manager Operations when necessary.
