Ophthalmic Imaging Team Lead, Band 6

Job Summary An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Ophthalmic Imager to take on a Band 6 Team Lead role within our Ophthalmic Imaging service. This post combines advanced clinical imaging expertise with operational leadership responsibility, supporting the delivery of a high-quality, patient-focused imaging service across multiple sites. You will play a key role in the day-to-day management of the imaging team, ensuring safe staffing, efficient clinic flow, and high standards of patient care. Working closely with specialist Band 6 colleagues in education and systems support roles within Ophthalmic Imaging, this role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to service development, workforce planning, and continuous improvement within a dynamic, supportive, forward-thinking and award winning team environment. Knowledge, Skills and Experience

The post holder will demonstrate

  • Significant experience in ophthalmic imaging modalities (e.g. OCT, fundus photography, FFA) - Strong understanding of ophthalmic pathology and imaging techniques - Experience in staff supervision, leadership, or team coordination - Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills - Ability to manage workload, prioritise effectively, and work under pressure - Knowledge of NHS clinical governance, service delivery, and patient care standards - Competence in Ophthalmic EMR systems and ophthalmic imaging software

It is desirable to have

  • Leadership or management qualification - Experience in service improvement or audit - Experience working across multiple sites Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provision of Clinical Services / Clinical Responsibilities - Undertake advanced ophthalmic imaging including OCT, fundus photography and FFA as required - Ensure high standards of imaging quality and patient-centred care throughout the team - Provide clinical expertise within imaging clinics - Support safe and efficient patient pathways across services 2. Professional Development, Education and Training - Support staff training and competency development alongside the Practice Educator - Contribute to maintaining professional standards and continuous learning within the team - Participate in appraisal processes and staff development planning 3. Management and Leadership - Lead the day-to-day operational delivery of ophthalmic imaging services - Line manage Band 35 staff, including: - Sickness management - Annual leave and rota coordination - Appraisals and performance management - Act as first point of escalation for staffing and operational issues - Ensure ophthalmic imaging estate is functional alongside the Ophthalmic System lead - Support service improvement, audit, and governance processes 4. Planning and Organisation - Coordinate imaging services across hospital and community settings - Ensure effective workforce planning and clinic allocation - Maintain safe staffing levels and efficient clinic flow - Support delivery of service objectives across multiple sites 5. Research and Development - Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives - Support implementation of best practice and evidence-based imaging standards 6.
