About this role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a speech and language therapist (band 5-6) with an interest in working as with patients with Mental Illness, autism and sensory issues.

The post holder would work alongside a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and a Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist who is Sensory Integration therapist. The potholder would also have a small case load of patients with dysphagia and communication issues.

A developing specialist role (band 6) would also be considered if you are able to demonstrate sound/independent/dysphagia skills.

Inter Trust Secondment would also be considered for 18months would be considered.

Working on the hospital Bank is also an option.

Broadmoor high secure hospital, is one of only three hospitals for England and Wales that treats patients with mental disorder who require maximum security because they represent a significant risk to others or themselves. The hospital has 14 wards Broadmoor divided into Admissions, Intensive Care, Increased Support and Assertive Treatment (ISAT) and Assertive Rehabilitation (AR). The average length of stay is five and a half years.

Working with the clinical teams, the SLT input varies from assessing and managing a new or deteriorating dysphagia, assessing speech, language and communicating difficulties, working directly or indirectly to implement treatment plans and representing SLT in the Care Programme Approach throughout a patient’s admission.

Previous experience working with people diagnosed with learning disability (LD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a mental health condition and/or challenging behaviours is desirable butnot essential.

Clinicians with a proven competence working within physical health settings may well have the desirable transferable skills to fulfil this role.

Dysphagia experience is essential (equal to Level C/D – RCSLT framework or Level 3/4 – EDSCF framework). There will be the opportunity to develop future competence when working.

The Trust offers a SLT – CPD support Group and networking opportunities across the Trust and other High Secure Hospitals.
