SEN Learning Support Assistant

About this role

Prospero Teaching is recruiting a dedicated and empathetic SEN Learning Support Assistant to support pupils across schools in the Southampton area. This role involves working with students who have a range of additional needs, including autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, communication needs, and social, emotional or behavioural challenges.

You will work closely with teaching staff to deliver consistent and personalised support, helping pupils access learning, build confidence, and remain engaged throughout the school day. Support may be provided on a 1:1 basis or within small groups, depending on individual needs.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting pupils who benefit from additional structure and care.

Provide 1

1 support and small‑group assistance for pupils with SEN

  • Support pupils during lessons, activities, and transitions
  • Assist with emotional regulation and behaviour support
  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual needs
  • Encourage confidence, independence, and participation
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and support staff
  • Maintain a calm, inclusive, and structured classroom environment
  • Follow safeguarding and school policies consistently
  • Experience working with children or individuals with additional needs
  • Calm, patient, and supportive approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to build positive and trusting relationships
  • Adaptable and responsive to changing situations
  • Reliable and able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Backgrounds in SEN, care, youth work, or support roles welcomed

Key Stages

Primary / Secondary

  • SEN or relevant child‑support experience desirable
  • Safeguarding training can be provided
  • Understanding of SEN strategies beneficial but not essential
  • Free accredited CPD, including safeguarding & behaviour management
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated consultant
  • Opportunities for continued work and progression
  • A meaningful role supporting pupils with additional needs
