Our Band 5 Practitioners are all given the opportunity to undertake a development pathway, where a clear competency framework is set to aid your professional development. This pathway will focus on both clinical and personal skills to enable your to apply for more senior positions once your competencies have been met.

As a registered Nurse/Paramedic you will provide high quality primary care services and a range of specialist interventions for offenders. At HMP Bristol, we deliver a nurse-led integrated primary care service and operate a specialist practice-based clinical model of care.
You will be delivering high quality clinical care within the Integrated Healthcare Service for the prison, demonstrating robust expert clinical skills and providing evidence-based nursing practice to those in prison.
Our primary care practitioners carry out a range of duties including
- Reception screening
- Emergency response
- Long term conditions management
- Planned care (e.g. running clinics)
- Enhanced assessment and diagnostic intervention services
- Health promotion activities

Shift pattern
3 x 12.5-hour shifts (7:00am–7:30pm) per week for 3 weeks and 4 x 12.5 hour shifts (7:00am–7:30pm) on the 4th week. Where possible, one shift will be protected for mandatory training, supervision, and administration on-site.
- 2 weekends in every 6-week roster including both Saturday and Sunday.
- 1 set of 3-night shifts every 12-week roster including 2 per annum on weekends (7:00pm–7:30am)

Our newly qualified Band 5 Practitioners are offered a structured offender healthcare development pathway, supported by a clear competency framework designed to promote both clinical and professional development within the prison healthcare environment. The pathway focuses on developing the specialist knowledge, skills and competencies required to work effectively in offender healthcare and to support progression into more senior roles as competencies are achieved.
We welcome applications from both newly qualified and experienced registered healthcare professionals who are interested in developing a career in offender healthcare. Newly qualified practitioners will be supported through a structured prison healthcare preceptorship programme; however, applicants should be aware that this programme is specific to offender healthcare and does not replace or contribute towards profession-specific preceptorship or portfolio requirements, such as the Newly Qualified Paramedic (NQP) programme.
Applicants should also note that this role is a Registered Healthcare Professional position within a prison healthcare setting rather than a profession-specific clinical role, and practice exposure may differ from that experienced in traditional healthcare settings.
