About this role
We are seeking to appoint a new substantive Respiratory Consultant Physician with general medicine accreditation. The appointment is to the University Hospitals Dorset Respiratory Team with an expectation that the successful candidate will work at both Poole and Bournemouth sites.
The post is a full-time post with 10 PA's and a contribution to the existing on-call rota. It will contain general Respiratory and general medical inpatient and outpatient care with development of any special interests.
The successful applicant will join us at an exciting time of great change and opportunity. The merged Respiratory Team across the both sites comprises of 15 Respiratory Consultants who work closely with a team of Respiratory Physiologists, Lung Care Specialist Nurses, TB Specialists and the Dorset Adult Integrated Respiratory Service (DAIRS) Team. The UHD model for the future is that all inpatient care will be delivered at the Bournemouth site and planned/elective care will be delivered across both sites from late 2026. Joining us at this time gives the applicant the unique opportunity to be involved in shaping the future service of UHD Respiratory Medicine including the building of new inpatient wards, the building and development of a dedicated Respiratory High Care Unit and a specialist Respiratory on-call.

The inpatient service has a planned move from the Poole Site to the RBCH site on completion of the new COAST building which is currently under construction.
If a role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under Trust or national terms and conditions.

As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out-of-hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA’s will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.
The job plan is negotiable but will be based on current joint job plans and departmental requirements. This can be discussed in more detail at the time of appointment.
