About this role

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an energetic, motivated, and forward‑thinking Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join our expanding Emergency Department at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. This is a permanent 10PA post, created to support the continued development of our busy Type 1 Emergency Department and to strengthen senior clinical leadership across the service.

You will join a progressive, supportive, and highly engaged Consultant team committed to delivering high‑quality emergency care to a rapidly growing local population. Our ED sees a diverse case mix and benefits from strong links with regional trauma, critical care, and pre‑hospital networks.

As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues. We are a large District General Emergency department seeing a broad spectrum of patients and

presentations. We have a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre for minor illness and injury management as well as an observation ward supported by 24 hour mental health liaison service. We have a large team of

medical, nursing and allied health care professionals providing a high quality efficient service for our patients allowing us to have flexibility in avoiding admissions where possible.

We have a strong collaborative relationship with Acute Medicine, working together to improve quality and flow for patient care at the front door.

The successful candidate will provide general clinical ED sessions and senior input into patient care, ensuring appropriate discharge and hospital admission, along with management and leadership

Clinical Duties

  • Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues
  • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
  • Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
  • Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues’ periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
  • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • The post holder will participate in an out of hours consultant rota, detailed within the job plan section
  • With other colleagues enable senior input into patients journey through the ED enhancing quality and Consultant ‘sign off’
  • Maintain the hours of availability of immediate Consultant opinion
  • Enhance the reputation of the department through multi-disciplinary education & training and research
