Mechanical Design Engineer

TKMS ATLAS UK develops, supplies, and supports cutting-edge maritime technology for customers worldwide. Based in Winfrith, Dorset, we work closely with the UK Royal Navy and international partners to deliver products that protect lives at sea.

We’re seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of mechanical systems for our advanced maritime platforms. You’ll contribute to the design and development of robust, innovative solutions across sonar, autonomous systems, and underwater technologies, working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.

You’ll collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers to develop complex systems from concept through to customer acceptance, ensuring performance, safety, and compliance throughout the engineering lifecycle.

Key responsibilities may include

  • Support the design and development of mechanical systems for complex maritime applications
  • Produce CAD models, technical drawings, and supporting design documentation
  • Assist with material and component selection and ensure compliance with relevant standards
  • Support integration, testing, and commissioning activities
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to technical documentation accuracy
  • Collaborate with suppliers and customers to help resolve technical challenges
  • Support engineering investigations, trials, and ongoing product improvement activities
  • Contribute to project delivery within agreed cost and time requirements

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ideally HNC/HND, degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience. (A degree is not essential)
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles, including materials, stress, and manufacturability
  • Experience using CAD tools, ideally Solid Edge, and familiarity with engineering drawing standards
  • Understanding of design for cost, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions
  • Knowledge of system engineering principles and multidisciplinary environments would be beneficial
  • Experience designing for marine or underwater environments would be advantageous but is not essential
