Exeter College • EX31 2BQ
About this role
What? A leadership role where English and maths really matter?
Not as a tick‑box. Not as an afterthought, but as the beating heart of learner success across the whole college.
If you believe English and maths can change lives, love leading people, and get a genuine buzz from watching outcomes improve because of something you put in place — we should talk.
We’re looking for an experienced, inspiring Head of English and Maths to provide strategic leadership across the college, championing high expectations, strong teaching and ambitious learner outcomes. You’ll be the person who keeps these subjects high‑profile, well‑planned and delivered brilliantly — ensuring learners gain the qualifications that open doors.
You’ll be joining a college that values people, invests in leadership and takes pride in doing things well.
What you’ll be doing (and making a real impact)
Leading English and maths strategy across the college, with GCSEs at the core
Championing high aspirations for all learners and driving strong progress and achievement
Line managing and inspiring the English and maths curriculum team
Ensuring consistently high standards of teaching, learning and assessment
Using data intelligently to improve attendance, engagement and outcomes
Working closely with Heads of Faculty to coordinate delivery across departments
Ensuring provision meets — and aims to exceed — national performance benchmarks
Leading quality assurance, standardisation and assessment compliance
Supporting recruitment, CPD and performance development within the team
Staying ahead of national developments in English and maths education
Teaching agreed hours in your specialist subject area
Playing an active role in the wider leadership and life of the college
Who we’re looking for
An experienced English or maths teacher from further education
A proven curriculum leader with experience managing and developing teams
Someone who has successfully improved learner outcomes, particularly GCSE or resit provision
Confident using performance data to drive improvement
A strong communicator who can build positive relationships across the organisation
Resilient, reflective and confident leading change
Passionate about education and aligned with our values of Respect, Community and Empowerment
You’ll need
A degree (or equivalent)
A recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent)
GCSE English and maths at grade C/4 or above
A commitment to ongoing professional development
(Leadership or specialist subject qualifications are welcome, but not essential)
What's in it for you
Generous holiday entitlement
Superb pension scheme
Loads of amazing benefits, including free counselling and discounted shopping
A genuine commitment to your professional development
Live and work within minutes of beautiful beaches and pictuersque moors
The chance to genuinely lead the college's English & maths provision
