The role is field based, you will be travelling to visit learners for observations and progress reviews across your allocated

region.

Salary up to £37k (based on experience and qualifications)

The Role

As an Observations Coach - Residential Childcare, you will be responsible for conducting high‑quality workplace observations of

learners in Residential Childcare. The role ensures that learners are applying the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs)

required by their apprenticeship standard, and that employers are providing the right support, opportunities and workplace

conditions. Insight from observations will drive improvements in learner progress, employer experience, and overall programme

quality.

The role will involve

Workplace Observations

  • Conduct planned and unplanned workplace observations of learners carrying out real work tasks.
  • Assess whether learners demonstrate the required KSBs from their apprenticeship standard during practical work activities.
  • Observe and record the effectiveness of workplace training, supervision and mentoring provided by employers.
  • Identify whether workplace tasks align with on‑programme learning and off‑the‑job requirements.

Quality, Compliance & Safeguarding

  • Ensure observations meet internal quality frameworks, DWP requirements and (if relevant) Ofsted expectations regarding learner

progress and workplace suitability.

  • Identify and escalate any safeguarding, health and safety, or compliance concerns.
  • Evaluate whether employers provide a safe, supportive and development‑focused environment.

Feedback & Reporting

  • Provide timely, constructive verbal and written feedback to learners, coaches and employers.
  • Produce clear observation reports that highlight strengths, gaps, risks and improvement actions.
  • Contribute to the organisation’s central quality dashboard and support trend analysis.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Work closely with Learning Coaches to triangulate evidence of skills development and confirm learner readiness for gateway and

EPA.

  • Support employers by sharing best practice in workplace mentoring and learner support.
  • Contribute to the organisation’s self‑assessment, quality improvement planning and internal review cycles.

About you

Qualifications

  • Hold Assessing qualification (CAVA/D23/A1) or be willing to achieve
  • Hold a minimum qualification of Level 5 in Residential Childcare/CYP
  • Hold GCSE grade C/4 or above in Maths & English or equivalent
  • Have a minimum of 2 years occupational managerial/team leader experience in a residential home
  • Understanding of OFSTED expectations relating to apprenticeship workplace learning
  • Experience working with apprentices or work‑based learning programmes.
