This post attracts overseas doctors with experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to familiarise themselves with the UK system and preparing for their exams whilst working in the UK.

The post offers registrars with an opportunity to consolidate their training in High risk Obstetrics with particular interest in maternity triage, Obstetric day unit, be aware of the referral pathway and antenatal patient management. The successful applicant will receive training in the management of acute Obstetrics and medical conditions in pregnant women. In addition, he/she will be taking part in a variety of obstetrics and gynaecology activities including gynaecology on-call, theatre activities for both Obstetrics and gynaecology, antenatal and gynaecology clinics. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain the local database and take part in research activity.

General Responsibilities

The duties under consultant supervision include the following –

1. Taking part in regular Obstetric tirage sessions alongside other registrars

2. Coordinate and management of the patients seen in maternity triage and Day unit with agreed management plans with the duty consultant

3. Participate on the on call rota with Gynaecology cover.

4. Attending main theatre and day surgery and performing procedures under consultant supervision

5. Scan reviews and formalizing management plan

6. Engage in research activities, either existing or candidates own research.

Teaching and Training Responsibilities

1. The clinician is involved in teaching junior staff, nurses and medical students.

2. The Registrar will assist with organisation of Departmental meetings and presenting cases.

3. There are facilities available for research.

Croydon Health Services provides integrated NHS services to care for people at home, in schools, and health clinics across the borough as well as at Croydon University Hospital and Purley War Memorial Hospital.

CUH provides more than 100 specialist services and is home to the borough’s only Emergency Department and 24/7 maternity services, including a labour ward, midwifery-led birth centre and the Crocus home birthing team.

Purley War Memorial Hospital (PWMH) in the south of the borough offers outpatient care, including diagnostic services, physiotherapy and ophthalmology services run by Moorfields Eye Hospital, alongside an onsite GP surgery.

Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after for people of all ages across Croydon and our Children’s Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.

On-Call Duties

The unit offers a two tier system for junior doctors. The successful applicant will work on the middle grade rota. The job includes nights and weekends on call. There is a regular weekend on-call and approximately three nights monthly.

Emergency Cover

The Junior Doctor accepts that he / she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Duty Consultant, in conjunction where practicable with his / her colleagues, both senior and junior.

It has been agreed between the professions and the DHSS while junior staffs accept that they will perform such duties, it stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular that Junior Staff should not be required to undertake work on this kind for prolonged periods on a regular basis.
