Maintenance Team Leader

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Team Leader to lead a small team of maintenance engineers within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role is focused on driving machine availability, planned preventative maintenance, continuous improvement, and engineering support across the production operation.

The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on engineering knowledge with the ability to lead and develop engineers. Ideal for Maintenance Engineers looking to step into management or supervisors looking for a fresh challenge. You will also play a key role being hand-on ensuring equipment reliability, minimising downtime, and supporting efficient manufacturing operations.

Key responsibilities

Maintenance Team Leadership and Performance

Lead, support, and develop a small team of maintenance engineers within the manufacturing department.

Drive engineering performance to support daily and weekly production KPIs.

Manage staff attendance, holidays, appraisals, and performance management activities.

Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and ongoing training to engineering team members.

Foster a positive engineering culture.

Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and Equipment Reliability

Develop and manage preventative maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and improve reliability.

Coordinate all maintenance activities through the company maintenance management system.

Ensure engineering activities are completed efficiently and recorded accurately.

Maintain engineering spares, stock control, and scheduled audits of spare part usage.

Reactive Maintenance and Fault Finding

Support breakdown response activities and technical fault finding across manufacturing equipment.

Identify and resolve mechanical and electrical engineering issues effectively.

Take a proactive approach to identifying improvement opportunities and recurring faults.

Provide hands-on engineering support when required.

Manufacturing Engineering Support

Support the ongoing operation and reliability of production machinery and equipment.

Work closely with production and planning teams to coordinate maintenance activities effectively.

Assist with engineering projects, equipment upgrades, and capital investment activities.

Support engineering improvements to enhance efficiency, productivity, and equipment performance.

Health, Safety and Compliance

Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out in line with Health & Safety, Environmental, and Quality procedures.

Promote high standards of housekeeping and safe working practices across the department.

Ensure machinery is maintained with safety and compliance as a priority.

Report incidents, accidents, and safety concerns through the correct processes.

Ensure PPE and safe systems of work are followed at all times.

Communication and Reporting

Produce clear and concise engineering and maintenance reports.

Maintain strong communication with production and planning teams to support operational efficiency.

Continuous Improvement and Engineering Projects

Identify opportunities to improve maintenance systems, reliability, and engineering performance.

Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives where applicable.

Assist with engineering development projects and process improvements.

Contribute to long-term engineering and maintenance strategy planning.

Skills and experience required for this Maintenance Team Leader job

Apprentice trained or professionally qualified engineer/technician.

Strong mechanical and electrical engineering background.

Previous experience within a manufacturing maintenance environment, injection moulding or similar would be preference but not essential

Supervisory or team leadership experience within engineering or maintenance preferred, or the ability to step into such a role

Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.

Experience working with planned preventative maintenance systems.

Ability to analyse engineering and maintenance data effectively.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively within a team environment and support team development.

Understanding of lean manufacturing techniques beneficial.
