Lead UX Designer

This role requires on-site presence at Asda House in Leeds three days per week. We’re really looking forward to having you around!

Craft leader. UI specialist. Problem solver. Setting the standard for design quality and consistency across Asda’s digital experiences.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you will lead a multi-disciplinary design team across product and service design, shaping how design is done at Asda. You’ll contribute directly to high-impact work, setting a high bar for experience quality, interaction design, and design craft.

You’ll lead a team of designers (6 direct reports, 8 in total), supporting their growth while remaining hands-on in design craft, combining leadership with active design contribution.

Your work will focus on improving the ease of use of Asda Groceries and supporting the growth of George.com across web and app.

You’ll work closely with product, engineering, research, and business teams, helping shape how we prioritise and deliver better customer experiences, and how those digital journeys connect into real-world retail interactions for customers.

We’re building a high-performing UX team to raise craft, embed customer insight, and deliver exceptional end-to-end experiences. If you’re motivated by complex problems, working at scale, and the opportunity to shape a growing design practice, this is your chance.

At Asda, we serve millions of customers every week, online, in-app, and in-store. Alongside that, George is one of the UK’s leading fashion brands, blending style, quality and value.

We’re on a mission to transform how customers shop, browse, and experience Asda and George digitally, and experience design is at the heart of that.

We’ve recently completed modernising our digital platforms, and our focus now is on improving the quality of the experience.

What you’ll do

  • Own and lead design delivery across products and services
  • Contribute hands-on design work on high-impact initiatives, setting the bar for craft and qualityacc
  • Define and uphold design standards from discovery through to delivery, using critique and mentoring to raise quality
  • Align design output with product priorities and customer needs
  • Oversee design capacity planning, resource allocation, and workload prioritisation
  • Own and evolve design operations and accessibility practice
  • Line manage and develop mid-weight and senior designers (performance, growth, coaching)
  • Lead hiring and onboarding of designers
  • Partner with Product, Research, CRO, Engineering, and business teams to align design with insight and roadmap
  • Confidently communicate design direction to senior stakeholders, influencing where we focus effort and how we define quality
  • Evolve design practices and ways of working, including how digital experiences connect into broader retail and operational journeys

What You’ll Bring

  • Deep expertise in user-centred design with an end-to-end delivery focus
  • Strong UI and app design capability with a focus on quality and usability
  • Strong experience with design systems, accessibility, and scalable UI patterns
  • Proven ability to raise design standards through critique and leadership
  • Experience leading and developing designers in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong workshop facilitation and collaboration skills
  • Ability to translate customer and business needs into clear design direction
  • Confident influencing stakeholders at senior level
  • Strong planning and prioritisation across multiple workstreams
  • Comfortable using tools such as Figma and working across low- and high-fidelity prototyping, knowing what to apply when
  • Open to evolving design methods and tools, including AI, and able to apply them thoughtfully to improve outcomes

This position is open to flexible working / job share / part-time working.
