This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal leadership role in shaping and advancing services focused on theprevention and management of preterm birth, helping to improve outcomes for women, babies, and families across our communities.
Working across both of our maternity sites —Frimley Park HospitalandWexham Park Hospital— you will lead on the implementation and coordination of evidence-based perinatal optimisation pathways for women identified as being at increased risk of preterm labour and birth.
You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including obstetricians, antenatal screening services, neonatal teams, and external partners to deliver high-quality, compassionate, and woman-centred care. This role offers the opportunity to influence practice, drive innovation, and support continuous improvement within maternity services.
- The Lead Midwife for Perinatal Optimisation is responsible for providing expert clinical leadership across maternity services to improve perinatal outcomes, with a primary focus on preterm birth prevention and management and fetal growth surveillance.
- The post holder will lead on service coordination, quality improvement, audit, and education, and will ensure effective implementation of elements of the NHS England Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle, particularly:
- Element 5 – Reducing Preterm Birth.
- Element 2 – Fetal Growth Restriction.

As postholder you will
- Ensure appropriate identification, monitoring and management of women at risk of preterm birth and/or fetal growth restriction.
- Provide specialist clinical leadership to embed evidence based fetal growth surveillance and preterm birth pathways within maternity services.
- Work collaboratively with antenatal screening, ultrasound, obstetric, neonatal, patient safety and quality teams to deliver safe, high quality, personalised care.
- Contribute to the reduction of stillbirth, preterm birth and neonatal morbidity through implementation of national guidance and local improvement initiatives.
- This is an experienced midwifery role requiring continued post registration professional development.
