An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Gastroenterology nurse to join the Upper GI services at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The maternity cover is required for 12 months, with a start from December 202

The post holder will be expected to provide a high quality service to all patients referred with a suspected diagnosis of upper GI cancer. The Upper GI Nurse Specialist works closely with the Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists, as part of the multidisciplinary team, to ensure that patients with suspected cancer and newly diagnosed upper gastrointestinal cancers receive the highest standard of care. The post holder may be required to work across 3 sites, SGH, Queen Mary's Hospital and The Nelson.

To provide a high quality service within St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust to all patients referred with a suspected diagnosis of upper GI cancer. The Clinical Nurse Specialist works closely with the Consultant Gastroenterologists and fellow Clinical Nurse Specialists, as part of the multi-professional team, to ensure that patients with suspected and newly diagnosed upper gastrointestinal cancer receive the highest standard of care.

The post holder will act as keyworker for patients referred on the UGI Two Week Rule (TWR) pathway with suspected cancer and after initial diagnosis of cancer, providing a link between patients and healthcare professionals across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Through work based learning and development the post holder will develop specialist knowledge and skills, demonstrated through the provision of advice, education and support to staff, patients and their families/carers.

Following support to develop into the role, the post holder will carry out upper GI TWR outpatients clinics to assess new patients referred on the pathway with suspected cancer and provide support during follow up appointments for patients newly diagnosed with an upper GI cancer.

In addition the post holder will be expected to participate in the development of the upper

GI service by

Ø Being recognised as an expert in their field holding additional specialist knowledge and experience

Ø Being aware of specialty-related research to enable the implementation of good clinical practice and other relevant research publications/evidence.

You will act as a keyworker for patients referred on the UGI TWR pathway with suspected cancer and after initial diagnosis of cancer, providing a link between patients and healthcare professionals across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

You will be responsible for delivering upper GI triage clinics for patients referred on the suspected cancer pathway to enable St George’s to improve compliance with the 28 Faster Diagnosis Standard. These are a mix of telephone and face to face outpatient clinics.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work autonomously as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team are essential.
