What is High Cost Area Allowance?

The High-Cost Area (HCA) allowance, also referred to as London Weighting is a payment made to employees who work in London and the surrounding areas.

As this post is based in Dartford, Gravesham or Swanley, the successful applicant will receive an additional payment each month.

5% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £1,303 per year and a maximum payment of £2,198 per year (the agreed annual amount will be divided into 12 equal amounts and paid monthly) (2025 figures)

As a key member of the multidisciplinary care team, you will

  • Carry out comprehensive, systematic nursing assessments considering mental, physical, social, cultural, psychological, spiritual, and environmental factors.
  • Work collaboratively with patients, carers, and other professionals to agree holistic, person-centred care plans.
  • Deliver and evaluate safe, competent care that supports recovery and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to service improvements and help us live our values every day –Caring, Inclusive, Curious, and Confident

Support Plan

As a newly qualified nurse, you’ll be fully supported through a structured 12-month preceptorship programme, including

  • Dedicated supervision and protected learning time
  • Access to development opportunities such as the Edward Jenner programme and Phlebotomy certification
  • Ongoing support from our nurse education team, even if you move roles within the Trust

Graduate Guarantee Commitment

This role is dedicated to newly qualified mental health nurses who have completed placements in Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust. These posts have been created as part of our graduate guarantee commitment. Due to a low number of available Band 5 posts across the trust, some individuals will initially be sitting in a Band 3 post for budgetary purposes. Successful candidates are appointed, paid, and supported as Band 5 Registered Mental Health Nurses, regardless of whether the post was originally a Band 3 or Band 5 post. There is no effect on your banding, duties, or responsibilities, other than a potential move within your locality when transferring into a substantive Band 5 nurse post (where applicable), when these become available.
