This position provides training opportunities in the care for cardiothoracic surgical patients in the pre- and post-operative setting with additional exposure to most cardiothoracic procedures.

You will work at a Junior Fellow (ST1-ST2) level and will have days allocated to cardiac and thoracic wards, cardiac high dependency unit and theatre. In theatre, there is opportunity to act as a first assistant in cardiac and thoracic cases, perform basic thoracic procedures and parts of cardiac procedures and progress to improve surgical skills and experience. There are many opportunities to perform ward-based procedures (such as arterial line and chest drain insertion) and undertake audit or research leading to presentations and publications.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

CHDU ward rounds are done with the on-call registrar and nurse in charge. There is a morning round done after handover with the night team and an afternoon round on weekdays to prioritise discharges and review patients returning from cardiac ICU.

Elective and emergency patients are admitted throughout the week and weekends. You will be required to clerk these patients and perform a pre-assessment if required using the proforma provided on the ward. Daily jobs include ward rounds, prescribing medications, requesting and reviewing investigations and reviewing unwell patients.

You will be required to help complete discharge summaries and complete HICSS data entry (the cardiac operative database). There will always be a registrar on-call to whom all concerns and questions should be escalated in the first instance. You will have plenty of opportunity to develop your basic surgical skills and gain exposure/experience in cardiac and thoracic procedures.

This includes a detailed breakdown of the key responsibilities, role expectations, and the qualifications we are looking for.
