Biomedical Scientist (BMS)
Key Responsibilities
- Perform analytical testing and validation of patient samples within Blood Sciences disciplines.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory analysers and automation systems.
- Process urgent, routine, and specialist investigations accurately and within turnaround times.
- Review and authorise results in line with SOPs, competency levels, and quality standards.
- Participate in IQC/EQA programmes and maintain compliance with ISO 15189 and UKAS standards.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure sample traceability.
- Follow Health & Safety, COSHH, and infection control procedures.
- Support the training of junior staff and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with clinicians, nurses, and laboratory colleagues to support patient care.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent recognised qualification.
- HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.
- IBMS accredited degree.
- Experience working within a Blood Sciences or Pathology laboratory.
- Knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Coagulation, or Blood Transfusion.
- Experience using LIMS and understanding laboratory quality standards.

- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prioritise workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Competent IT and data management abilities.
Desirable
- IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion.
- NHS laboratory experience.
- Experience with laboratory automation, audits, validations, or quality improvement projects.
- Flexible approach to shift and out-of-hours working.
Working Conditions
- Shift, weekend, and on-call working may be required.
- Role involves handling biological specimens in a regulated clinical laboratory environment.
