West London Children’s Healthcare (WLCH) is seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious Locum Consultant Paediatrician in Respiratory Medicine to join our busy paediatric respiratory and sleep service. This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK’s most innovative and collaborative child health partnerships, bringing together services across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will join a highly regarded multidisciplinary respiratory and sleep medicine team led by Professor Louise Fleming and will contribute to the delivery and further development of paediatric respiratory and sleep services across WLCH.

The Locum Consultant Paediatrician in Respiratory Medicine will play a key role in delivering and developing paediatric respiratory and sleep medicine services across West London Children’s Healthcare, primarily based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with cross-site responsibilities as required.

The postholder will join an established multidisciplinary respiratory team and contribute to the provision of high-quality inpatient, outpatient and acute respiratory care for children and young people.

The successful candidate will participate in consultant attending and on-call respiratory rotas, provide specialist respiratory and sleep clinics, and work collaboratively with colleagues across WLCH and partner organisations to ensure safe, effective and equitable care.

The role also includes active involvement in teaching, training, clinical governance, quality improvement and research, with opportunities to develop academic interests through close links with Imperial College London and the Imperial College Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health.

The postholder will contribute to service leadership, pathway development and strategic planning to support WLCH’s vision of improving outcomes and reducing inequalities for children and young people across North West London.

  • · To provide paediatric respiratory and sleep medicine services to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and across WLCH as needed.
  • · To participate in clinical and other service activities with the objective of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
  • · To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and departmental research, including clinical audit and CPD.
  • · To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development across the two sites.

1. Provide High Quality Care to Patients

1.1. The postholder must be medically qualified and preferably hold GMC specialist registration for paediatrics and paediatric respiratory medicine and hold a licence to practice.

1.2. To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.

1.3. To ensure prompt attendance at agreed Direct Clinical Care (DCC) programmed activities.

1.4. To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to response to their views.

2. Performance Management

To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in

2.1. Clinical Efficiency, for example LoS reductions, reducing DNA rates.

2.2. Quality of Outcomes, for example infection control targets.

2.3. Financial Management, for example identification, implementation and achievement of cost management programmes and participating in efforts to ensure that services are provided cost effectively.

2.4. Operational Efficiency, for example waiting list initiatives and demand management.

3. Medical Staff Management

3.1. To work with colleagues to ensure that junior doctors’ hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.

3.2. To ensure adequate systems and processes are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments.

3.3. To participate in the recruitment of staff as and when required.

3.4. To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.

3.5. To be responsible for the annual appraisal of doctors in training, Trust doctors, clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager.

4. Governance

4.1. To review clinical outcomes in designated areas using external benchmarking data where appropriate.

4.2. Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.

4.3. To work closely with the Directorate, Public and Patient Involvement Panels in relation to clinical and service developments as required.

4.4. Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored.

4.5. To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.

4.6. To keep fully informed about best practice in specialty areas and ensure implications for practice change are discussed with the Clinical Directors.

4.7. To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the team.

5. Strategy and Business Planning

5.1. To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the Directorates and Trusts where appropriate.

5.2. To represent the Trusts at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings as delegated by the Clinical Directors.

6. Leadership and Teamworking

6.1. To work collaboratively with all members of the team across both sites.

6.2. To chair regular meetings for the specialty.

6.3. To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.
