Examinations Officer

About this role

Cornwallis Academy is seeking to appoint a highly motivated, exceptionally organised, and proactive Examinations Officer to join our team from the new academic year. This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the smooth running of examinations across our thriving secondary school and Sixth Form provision.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient, accurate, and secure administration of all public and internal examinations, ensuring full compliance with awarding body and Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations. The role requires excellent organisational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced environment.

Previous experience working within a school examinations environment would be advantageous; however, full training will be provided for a candidate who can demonstrate excellent administrative, organisational, and communication skills.

Working Hours

37 hours per week. Monday–

Thursday

08:00–16:00 and

Friday

08:00–15:30

Term Time plus 3 weeks (41 weeks per year)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the administration, organisation, and delivery of all external examinations for GCSE, vocational, and Sixth Form qualifications in accordance with JCQ and awarding body regulations.
  • Coordinate the administration and organisation of internal examinations, mock examinations, and assessment periods throughout the academic year.
  • Manage examination entries, amendments, withdrawals, and results processes using the school’s Management Information System and awarding body portals.
  • Produce and distribute examination timetables, seating plans, candidate information, and examination documentation.
  • Recruit, train, deploy, and support invigilators to ensure examinations are conducted effectively and in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate examination records and ensure the secure handling and storage of confidential examination materials.
  • Liaise effectively with senior leaders, teaching staff, SEND teams, students, parents/carers, and awarding organisations regarding examination arrangements and access arrangements.
  • Support students and staff during results days, including post-results services such as reviews of marking and access to scripts.
  • Keep up to date with changes to examination regulations, procedures, and best practice to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.

  • High levels of integrity, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Good IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Office applications and school information systems.
  • The ability to prioritise workload effectively and work independently using initiative.
  • A flexible and solution-focused approach to work.

Knowledge and Understanding

The ideal candidate will have

  • An understanding of examination processes and procedures within a secondary school and Sixth Form environment.
  • Knowledge of JCQ regulations and awarding body requirements (desirable).
  • Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and the importance of maintaining examination security and integrity.
  • An understanding of access arrangements and inclusive examination practice (desirable).
