Trust Doctor (eqv to ST5+) in Congenital Cardiology

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Trust Doctor (ST5+) to join our Congenital Cardiology team at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

This one-year post is ideally suited to provide advanced cardiology training, in the management of adults with congenital heart disease. This consultant led service now provides specialist care for approximately 11000 adults, with around 600 new patients referred per annum form our sister institution Great Ormond Street Hospital and other cardiac centres around the UK.

The service is based in the Bart’s Heart centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and provides long-term and often life-long care for the increasing number of adults with congenital heart disease. The service provides expert medical and surgical care within an academic environment with a range of specialities relevant to Congenital Heart patients. The service fosters a multidisciplinary approach to this specialised patient population and close links have been established with the relevant specialities throughout Barts and the London NHS trust. There is also a close co-operation and collaboration with the team of paediatric cardiologists/surgeons based at Great Ormond Street. Diagnostic and Interventional catheterisation procedures are regularly performed as well as cardiac surgical interventions therefore the experience gained is broad and varied.

This educationally approved post offers extensive opportunities for clinicians wishing to pursue a specialist career in adult congenital heart disease or for general cardiologists wishing to gain greater knowledge of CHD. The successful applicant will work within the GUCH team to contribute to clinical, administrative, teaching and research activities.

Training will encompass the following key areas required to equip the candidate with the necessary skills to manage adult patients with complex congenital heart disease, namely exposure to a broad range of medical and surgical problems; decision making skills, practical skills including transoesophageal echocardiography and diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation; teaching skills; medical audit; research opportunities.

He/she will participate in a daytime rota system (1:3) to reply to queries from patients, CNS team or from referring general practitioners or physicians. The postholder will be expected to attend a daily handover meeting on ward 6D at 0800 and undertake a daily ward round for inpatients and contribute to 2 consultant ward rounds per week.

Other duties include undertaking a DCC list for CHD patients and assisting in OPD with a commitment of 2-3 OPD per week. Training will be offered in the practical skills required for the diagnosis and management of medical and surgical problems in adult patients with congenital heart disease including TTE and TOE
