As a member of a multi-disciplinary team you will demonstrate a level of expertise within the specialist service, providing specialist advice, education and support to health care professionals and parents/carers of children. You will have contributed to the management of these children in the acute setting. The post holder will actively undertake clinical audits and research within the specialist area.

Main Duties/Key Results Areas
Focusing, where possible, on outcomes qualitative as well as quantitative. The following responsibilities are common to all posts in the Trust. To ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments. General Duties
1. To be an active team member who provides specialist evidence based nursing care to children and their families. 2. Under supervision to manage own workload within a defined specialist group, by assessing and prioritising clinical needs within agreed specialist guidelines. 3. To contribute to the development of specialist programmes of care, reviewing and updating plans for documentation. 4. Communicates very sensitive and distressing information to parents and families as appropriate. 5. Ability to assess and advise patients and relatives in crisis situations and ensure that the whole team meets their needs. 6. Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in their speciality and being able to interpret information and take appropriate action. 7. Contribute to the development of appropriate information for staff, families and children within the speciality. Where appropriate provide ongoing support for children and their families whether at home or in hospital. 8. Ensure that Trust policies are adhered to, particularly Manual Handling, Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Infection Control. 9. Ensure that precautions are taken to minimize the risk of cross infection in particular the safe disposal of body fluids. 10. Maintain all documents in a legible and timely manner according to NMC requirements. 11. Ensure continued effective registration of the NMC and be familiar with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. Be accountable for their own practice. 12. To maintain clinical expertise and practice in line with professional Code of Conduct. 13. Be aware of the NMC Scope of Professional Practice and ensure competency to undertake duties as allocated. Specifically; a. To develop and maintain competence in care and management of children undergoing endocrine function tests. This includes venesection, cannulation, administration of intravenous fluids and medication and taking of blood samples from indwelling cannulae. b. In conjunction with the MDT reassess technique / compliance and potential problems of children taking medication at each clinic visit. c. Maintain own expertise in the measurement of children. 14. To participate in the development of nursing practice in line with changing and expanding clinical practice guidelines, ensuring safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills. 15. Take the lead or is part of a team to manage planned discharge to the referring hospital or back into the community. 16. Promote the Trust and Directorate Nursing Strategy encouraging staff to be involved in all groups. 17. Develop good networks with patients, families and staff, seeking the views of service users and encourage participation in certain aspects of service development. 18. Enables and supports colleagues in developing effective communication skills particularly in difficult situations. 19. Ensure that effective communication has been established with all disciplines, patients and relatives. 20. Liaising with all members of the speciality team to discuss individual patients clinical needs. 21. To participate in Multidisciplinary meetings regarding the needs of specific children and their families to plan appropriate care programmes. 22. Offer appropriate specialist advice to other professionals on aspects of nursing care within own speciality. Specifically; a. Provide nursing care at regional endocrine clinics. b. For children on growth hormone therapy advise on types of devices and assist with co-coordinating prescriptions. c. To support the smooth running of the nurse led clinic d. To provide information, advice and training to teachers and school staff regarding medical conditions and treatment 23. To be part of a team which plans develops and undertake clinical audits or research within the clinical governance framework of the Directorate and empower / facilitates other staff to undertake projects with guidance as required. 24. To be involved in the review or generation of new polices with other members of the multidisciplinary and senior management team. 25. Advising the CSM, SNM and speciality lead and to contribute to the development of the speciality service. Specifically; a. Participate in audit of children taking growth hormone and other high cost treatment ensuring cost effective management. 26. Provide specialist clinical advice, training and education to healthcare professionals within and outside the Trust through a variety of teaching methods that encourages a positive learning experience. 27. Take responsibility for own professional growth and keep up to date with professional development and research. Contributing to specialist membership group. 28. Participate in clinical supervision as supervisee in accordance with NMC guidelines. 29. Ensure that a professional and updated portfolio is maintained as per NMC guidance. Specifically; a. Participate in teaching programmes for trained staff and HCAs working on Paediatric wards and in Childrens Outpatients. This job description will be reviewed yearly as part of the annual individual performance review, to ensure that it reflects the responsibilities of the post.
