University Hospital Southampton NHS FT • Southampton SO16 6YD

Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Clinical Nurse Specialist

About this role

A Vacancy at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Paediatric oncology ambulatory care is a specialist service that supports children and young people (CYP) with cancer who do not need to stay overnight in hospital. Instead of inpatient admission CYP will attend day care for planned treatments such as chemotherapy, blood tests, transfusions, symptom management, and follow-up reviews, then return home the same day.

This model of care helps minimise disruption to family life, reduces time spent in hospital, and supports a more child-centred, flexible approach to treatment while maintaining close clinical oversight.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

a) Take primary responsibility for the delivery and ongoing development of specialist nursing care within the Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Service for a defined patient group, practising autonomously as an expert practitioner and senior member of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based care.

b) Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight for the ambulatory team, to ensure the safe therapeutic management of a complex paediatric oncology caseload, effective patient flow, and the delivery of high-quality ambulatory pathways.

c) Act as the identified key worker for a designated patient caseload, coordinating complex treatment plans and overseeing care across ambulatory, inpatient, outpatient, and community settings to ensure continuity, safety, and an excellent patient and family experience.

d) Deliver highly specialist advice, education, and support to patients, families, carers, and healthcare professionals within the Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Service. Practice clinically across agreed care settings while providing expert guidance on service delivery, quality improvement, and the ongoing development of ambulatory oncology care.

e) Work strategically across professional, departmental, and Trust boundaries to develop and enhance patient-centred ambulatory pathways, leading nurse-led initiatives that improve patient outcomes, reduce avoidable admissions, support same-day care, and drive innovation within paediatric oncology services.
