The role

Carlisle Support Services is looking for a Head of Security, will be responsible for the overall site security operations at Somerset House, protecting visitors, residents, personnel and the Grade 1 Listed Buildings. This includes managing and minimising the security risk for the estate through physical, technical and security staffing requirements for all core operations, as well as the additional support required for events ensuring quality in the delivery of all security services.

Your core role will include but not be limited to the following activities

  • Lead on all security operations ensuring that physical and security staffing arrangements meet the Trust’s requirements. Ensure that procedures are in place and are being implemented in accordance with contract terms and Trust policy.
  • Through close liaison with event teams and contracted service delivery partners, manage the delivery of event security as a complimentary service to the core security contract. Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with the Trusts corporate and live events teams, ensuring effective coordination across all Trust events.
  • Development of the site security risk register. Ensure that issues identified in the Risk Assessment process are mitigated or controlled in accordance with assigned responsibilities and schedules. Provide ongoing threat assessment to the business and advise Estate Management accordingly. Work closely with our Counter Terrorism Security Adviser’s on continual improvement for the site’s security and counter terrorism function.
  • Working with the Trust and Corps security, advise on the necessary changes and improvements to comply with the new PROTECT duty for all public spaces and across all day-to-day operations and the events and activities.
  • Participate in the Trust’s Health and Safety Committee, providing advice for estate security matters. Coordinate the development of the Estate Incident Response, Emergency, Hostile Threat and Business Continuity Plans.
  • Work closely with the Head of Visitor Experience and our security staff to deliver an excellent visitor experience for our residents and visitors, in line with the service delivered by our in-house Visitor Experience team.
  • Be able to influence the decision-making process, in all matters relating to the security of the estate, including all ad hoc activity through events and other site activity. Update the Trust’s executive team on a quarterly basis on all security related risk and changes to security arrangements.
  • To liaise and assist estate partners, Kings College London and the Courtauld Institute. Ensure the estate security strategy is agreed and implemented across all institutions.
  • To coordinate routine checks to ensure all contracted security staff are furnished with the appropriate SIA license for their role, and it is displayed in the correct manner.
  • Conduct Event Security Risk assessments in line with current legislation, and through liaison with Somerset House management and event staff, ensure all planned events are staffed and coordinated to manage security risk to the Estate and delivered to a professional standard within the required time scale.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with the local business community on and off site, the Northbank Business Improvement District, also police, local authorities etc.
  • Promote a positive Security culture to all members of the Somerset House community, increasing awareness and compliance of security measures in place to protect the building and the people within it.
  • Coordinate emergency evacuation plans for the estate, including ensuring that there is a suitable number of trained fire marshals across the site for the safe evacuation of staff and tenanted areas. Plan and conduct fire marshal and first aid training sessions as required for staff and tenants.
  • Active involvement in the recruitment process and final selection for Security staff based at Somerset House, including all event staff.
  • Reporting monthly accounts/management all deviations outside of the core contract hours (such as events) in order to ensure efficient and accurate invoicing to the relevant area.
  • The setting and tracking of key strategic objectives in the form of robust account development plans.
  • Overseeing the management of the staffing roster at least 3 months in advance, highlighting any concerns with the Security Operations Manager to ensure that the account is always staffed as per the contractual requirement.

The ideal candidate

  • Demonstrable experience in a security management role at a similar level.
  • Degree qualification in an appropriate security or risk management discipline
  • Experience working within a multi-use estate, desirable to include experience from at least 3 areas including tenanted office space, public realm & access, events and/or exhibitions, and culture and arts uses.
  • Experience operating Technical Security Systems and software including CCTV (ideally Avigilon), Access Control, alarms, scheduling and reporting tools.
  • Experience in leading/managing large teams

Successful candidates will be required to provide original documentation for detailed screening and vetting processes.
