Medical & Dental Education Manager (Undergraduate)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated individual to join the Medical & Dental Education team within the Education Academy at Barts Health NHS Trust, on a 12-month fixed term contract to cover maternity leave.

This is a pivotal Band 6 role supporting the delivery of undergraduate medical and dental education across The Royal London Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, in partnership with Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and NHS England.

The post holder will play a key role in the operational delivery, coordination and continuous improvement of the MBBS curriculum, ensuring that the Trust meets its contractual obligations while providing a high-quality learning experience for students.

This is a leadership role within the undergraduate education function, responsible for overseeing complex education workstreams and managing a team of administrative staff to ensure the smooth running of placements, teaching programmes and assessment activity.

The Medical & Dental Education team are responsible for ensuring that Barts Health meets the contractual requirements of NHS England, as well as maintaining the high standards of education and training required by the General Medical Council (GMC) and partner Higher Education Institutions.

The post holder will

  • Lead the operational delivery of undergraduate medical and dental education programmes across site(s)
  • Support the implementation of MBBS curriculum developments and placement expansion in line with national priorities
  • Coordinate and oversee clinical placement activity, ensuring capacity, quality and compliance
  • Provide day-to-day management and oversight of Band 4 and Band 5 administrative staff, ensuring effective delivery of all undergraduate processes
  • Ensure all programmes meet GMC standards and NHSE contractual requirements
  • Develop and maintain quality assurance systems, including data collection, reporting and evaluation of student experience
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including:

o Undergraduate Associate Deans

o Directors of Medical Education

o Clinical Leads and Teaching Fellows

o QMUL Medical School

o NHS England

  • Lead on planning, organisation and delivery of key undergraduate activities, including:

o Student placements

o Induction programmes

o Teaching delivery

o Assessment activity (e.g. OSCEs)

  • Analyse data and produce reports to support decision-making and service improvement

Undergraduate Medical & Dental Education Delivery

  • Lead the coordination and delivery of undergraduate placements across clinical departments
  • Ensure alignment between curriculum requirements and clinical service capacity
  • Support the implementation and evaluation of new curriculum models
  • Liaise with clinical leads to ensure high-quality learning environments

Operational Management and Team Coordination

  • Provide day-to-day management and coordination of Band 4 and Band 5 staff
  • Allocate workload and ensure delivery of all undergraduate administrative processes
  • Monitor performance, provide guidance and support escalation of issues
  • Ensure consistency and compliance across all processes

Quality Assurance and Governance

  • Ensure programmes meet GMC standards and NHSE contractual requirements
  • Oversee data collection, reporting and evaluation of education programmes
  • Support preparation for quality visits and regulatory reviews
  • Identify and escalate risks relating to education delivery

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across a wide stakeholder network
  • Act as a key point of contact for undergraduate education on site(s)
  • Present information at meetings and contribute to decision-making forums
  • Influence stakeholders to support delivery of education priorities

Planning and Service Improvement

  • Develop and implement work plans with clear objectives and timelines
  • Analyse data to inform improvements in education delivery
  • Contribute to service development and innovation
  • Participate in Trust-wide and external working groups

Information Management and Reporting

  • Develop systems for data collection and reporting
  • Produce reports to support governance and performance monitoring
  • Ensure accurate and timely information is available for stakeholders
