This role will work within the Office of the Traffic Commissioner (OTC)

The Traffic Commissioners (TC) and NI Regulator have varying statutory responsibility for the licensing and regulation of GB based operators of heavy and light goods vehicles involved in international transport, buses, and coaches (public service vehicles) and of those who drive them, the registration of local bus services, adjudication of appeals against the impounding of vehicles operated without a valid operator’s license and other functions. The Secretary of State (SoS) appoints Traffic Commissioners directly.

This role will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of OTC, DfT sponsoring Department and Department for Transport (DfT) People Management Service (Human Resources) Department. This role will coordinate the administrative responsibilities delegated to the COO by the Secretary of State (SoS).

The role holder will deal with a variety of areas including relationship management, diplomacy and engagement, liaising with the Public Appointments team. They will draft and refine high-level documents and tactical submissions for the COO to support execution of their delegation responsibilities.

You will work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to respond to requests for information, providing high quality factual responses, working closely with the COO and the Senior Traffic Commissioner (STC), where required.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to

  • Act as an access point for TC’s to gain people management advice and support from DfT HR experts.
  • Act as central point for the coordination of the administrative review and updating of the framework document, setting in place a yearly formal review schedule for the future, working closely with the COO, STC and DfT colleagues.
  • Execute management responsibilities effectively and in line with DVSA policies and processes, working with, leading and acting as a role model for team members and colleagues in line with Civil Service values.
  • Demonstrate leadership by providing guidance to staff to support the delivery of objectives. Manage and engage with honesty and integrity, and upholding the reputation of the Agency, Department and Civil Service.
  • Liaise with relevant internal and external departments to ensure that internal and external customer needs are met and that these requirements are fully communicated throughout the business.
