Personal Assistant / Carer

About this role

We are looking for a responsible, energetic and engaging person to work as a Personal Assistant for our 18-year-old son with a Severe Learning Disability. He is a very happy, healthy and active boy who is keen to be out and about. An experienced PA would be ideal, but this would also suit students wanting experience and psychology students, or someone working with SEN students in a school or college.

Responsibilities

Attend and participate in pre-booked weekly SEN activities which include football, hockey, companion cycling, yoga and other disability sports groups and youth clubs.

Walk and travel on public transport to the supermarket and coffee shops.

Hand-over-hand support with brushing teeth, washing hands/face, comb hair, eating and support being taken to the toilet at home and in the community.

Play simple board games and read story books at home

Out and about in all weathers

Skills required

Able to engage with a young person with a learning disability

Proactive, able to take the lead and show initiative

Responsible for safety when out in the community, travelling on public transport and walking to and from an activity

Physically active

Clear spoken English

Fun to be around

Empathetic and caring

A willingness to learn Makaton signing (parents will teach)

Reliable and punctual

Permanent UK resident

Minimum 1 year commitment

Hours

8 hours on Saturdays (negotiable)

Plus up to 36 hours per week during the school holidays (Monday to Sunday)

Rate

£28 per hour gross

* During school holiday times, this job pays up to £1008 gross per week

* During school term time Saturdays, this job pays up to £224 per day

* Payments funded by a social care package, paid for by the local authority

Expenses

Cost of activities will be covered by family

Training

Parents will provide full training and will shadow all activities until such time as both parties are comfortable with the PA being left alone with our son.

Full DBS checks will be required. The successful applicant will have a DBS check carried out by the local authority at no cost to the applicant.

Written references will be required
