Job Overview

The Senior Specification Technologist is responsible for managing product specifications, ensuring compliance with food safety and legal requirements, and maintaining accurate technical data across the business.

The role works closely with Technical, Quality, Warehouse, Operations, Sales, Marketing, Finance, and NPD teams to support product safety, compliance, and specification management. It also involves liaising with suppliers, customers, and external stakeholders to manage technical information, certifications, and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain and update product specifications in line with legal, customer, and internal requirements.

Ensure all claims relating to nutrition, allergens, provenance, and certifications are accurate and supported.

Maintain specification databases and ensure product information is accurate and up to date.

Review product labels to ensure compliance with food labelling legislation.

Ensure all product information complies with food safety regulations, customer requirements, and industry standards.

Monitor food safety alerts and legislative updates, taking corrective action where necessary.

Stay informed of changes in UK and EU food legislation and implement updates to specifications and internal processes accordingly.

Support internal and external audits by maintaining accurate technical documentation.

Identify compliance concerns and escalate issues where necessary to support supplier and product compliance.

Liaise with suppliers to obtain specifications, certifications, risk assessments, and supporting compliance documentation.

Assist with supplier approval processes and maintain supplier documentation and technical records.

Provide technical support relating to product specifications, allergens, and compliance queries.

Complete customer specification forms, technical questionnaires, and ad-hoc requests.

Maintain and update customer portal systems and specification platforms.

Deliver technical and food safety training where required.

Work collaboratively with internal departments to ensure specifications are effectively integrated into operational and commercial processes.

Investigate specification discrepancies or non-conformance issues and implement corrective actions.

Support continuous improvement initiatives across technical processes.

Provide general administrative support to the technical function and assist with ad-hoc projects as required.

Skills & Experience

Degree in Food Science, Food Technology, or a related discipline.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Specification Technologist or similar technical role within the food manufacturing industry.

Strong understanding of food composition, nutrition, allergens, and allergen management.

Knowledge of food labelling legislation, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Experience using specification systems and technical data management platforms.

Understanding of food safety standards, HACCP principles, and quality management systems.

Experience supporting audits and maintaining compliance documentation.

Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

High attention to detail with strong data accuracy and administration skills.

Up-to-date knowledge of UK and EU food legislation.
