Purpose
Responsible for the day-to-day management of the 6th Form students – behaviour, attendance & punctuality, dress code and more.
Main Duties
To ensure that the Year 12 and Year 13 study areas are effective learning environments for the students to work in
Be alert to Child Protection/Safe-guarding concerns amongst 6th Form Students, and take appropriate action/seek advice to address concerns
Liaising with external agencies, such as CAMHS in order to ensure students in need of additional support are receiving the help they require
Management of the students in the 6th Form Detention, and any students who do not attend the 6th Form detention are reprimanded for this
To ensure the most able students are supported for applications to the most competitive undergraduate courses, such as applying to Oxbridge or applying to study Medicine
To ensure the smooth running of the 6th Form Silent Study areas, working with the 6th Form Study Centre Supervisor, and with staff who cover the Silent Study Centre
To develop leadership opportunities in the 6th Form, which included the 6th Form Leadership Team, but also developing opportunities for 6th Form students to be involved in supporting students in Years 7 – 11 throughout the school.
Working with the Heads of Year 12 and Year 13 for the organisation and delivery of the Year 12 and Year 13 celebration events
Working with the Heads of Year 12 and Year 13 for the organisation and delivery of the Year 12 and Year 13 Preparation Evening
English Language GCSE and Maths GCSE re-sit group
Ensuring that the students in the English Language and Maths GCSE re-sit groups are progressing towards obtaining a Grade 4 or above in the November and May/June re-sits.
Prefect Team
Working with the Head of Year 13 to manage the Year 13 Senior Prefect Team, ensuring they play an active role at Highams Park School, supporting at events such as the Year 7 Open Evening and the 6th Form Open Evening.
Organisation of Destinations Process
Working with the Head of Year 12, regarding the organisation of Post 18 Days in the Summer Term for Year 12 students. Providing Year 12 students with information regarding the routes available to them after completion of their A Levels (University, Work, Gap Years). Provision of activities which are appropriate to Post 16 students, such as Writing a Personal Statement and Student Finance.
Working with the Head of Year 12 with the organisation of the Post 18 Parent Information Evening in the Spring Term, making parents aware of the Post 18 Options available to their son/daughter.
UCAS
Working with the Head of Year 13, in ensuring Year 13 students
are equipped with the knowledge to make a successful UCAS application.
Monitoring of the submission of tutor references.
Checking of UCAS references before their submission to UCAS.
Predicting grades for Year 13 students and communicating these grades to the students.
Respond to queries from University Admissions Tutors regarding predicted grades etc.
Apprenticeships
Making students aware of apprenticeship opportunities available and how they can apply for
these opportunities, this could be done through the 6th Form Bulletin.
6th Form Bulletin
Production of the weekly Highams Park 6th Form Bulletin, to communicate important information to 6th Form students, liaising with the 6th Form Team, and the Senior Prefects to see if they have any announcements for the Bulletin.
6th Form Recruitment
Prospectus
Working with the Academy Business Manager to oversee the publication of the 6th Form prospectus, including the collection of photographs for the prospectus.
Informing subject leaders of the requirements to produce a prospectus page, providing them with examples of what is required.
Arranging a meeting with the prospectus publisher regarding the production of the prospectus.
Marketing
Arranging and attending marketing events with Year 13 prefects at local secondary schools within Waltham Forest
Responsibility for marketing the 6th Form through appropriate methods such as adverts in local newspapers, a banner outside the front of the school to promote the 6th Form Open Evening.
Delivering assemblies to Year 11 students at Highams Park School, as well as speaking with external students at other local schools.
Organising the 6th Form Open Evening
Looking through 6th Form Applications to determine their suitability for the chosen courses, and the organisation of the 6th Form Taster Day taking place in late June each year.
Additional Responsibilities
Ensure the administration of the Post 16 Bursary Fund
Undertake interviews for prospective 6th Form students outside of school hours
Attendance at A Level Results Day and 6th Form Enrolment sessions in August
Line Management Responsibilities
Ensuring that the Head of Year 12 and Head of Year 13 work with the Attendance Secretary regarding Sixth Form students who are late to school, and the identification of students with concerning levels of attendance
Oversee the quality assurance of 6th Form tutor time to ensure it is being implemented effectively by each Head of Year.
Effective monitoring of attendance and punctuality and to develop and implement appropriate intervention strategies if attendance falls below 96%, or if multiple students are turning up late to school each morning. The Head of 6th Form will be required to look at which students have been late to school each day and liaise with the 6th Form Study Centre Supervisor to determine which students are in the 8am detention the following school day.
Ensure that the Heads of Year 12 and 13 are running tutor meetings in accordance with the school calendar.
Ensure that the Heads of Year 12 and Year 13 have an assembly rota planned out for each term, the Head of 6th Form will be required to lead assemblies on a rota basis to both Year 12 and Year 13.
