About the role
We are seeking an experienced FOI and Public Correspondence Manager to lead a small, high-performing team responsible for handling Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) enquiries, complaints, public correspondence and stakeholder enquiries.
This is a varied and rewarding opportunity for someone with strong knowledge of information rights legislation and excellent leadership skills. You will play a key role in ensuring responses are accurate, timely and compliant, while maintaining high standards of customer service and governance across the organisation.
The successful candidate will act as the organisation's subject matter expert on FOI and complaints handling, providing advice and guidance to colleagues at all levels. You will also oversee performance monitoring, quality assurance, reporting and policy development, helping to drive continuous improvement and best practice.
Key responsibilities
You will
- Lead and manage a small correspondence team, supporting performance, development and delivery of excellent customer service.
- Provide expert advice on Freedom of Information requests, Environmental Information Regulations and data protection matters.
- Ensure effective and timely responses to FOI requests, complaints and public enquiries.
- Advise colleagues on the application of exemptions, public interest tests and complaint handling procedures.
- Monitor casework performance, conduct data quality checks and ensure service standards are achieved.
- Produce regular reports and insight for senior management, identifying trends, risks and areas for improvement.
- Maintain and review FOI and complaints policies and procedures in line with legislation and best practice.
- Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders to obtain information and coordinate responses.
- Represent the organisation at cross-government working groups and professional forums.
- Contribute to wider communications and stakeholder management activity where required.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate
- Strong specialist knowledge of Freedom of Information legislation, Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and Data Protection legislation, including practical application.
- Experience managing or supervising a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
- Strong analytical and reporting skills, including the ability to interpret and present performance data clearly.
- Experience managing high volumes of sensitive correspondence and competing priorities.
- A commitment to delivering high-quality customer service and continuous improvement.
- The ability to work collaboratively, exercise sound judgement and maintain confidentiality.
