About this role
The post holder is a key member of the Sleep Disorders Centre, providing clinical, technical, and administrative support to ensure safe and effective assessment and treatment of patients with sleep-disordered breathing. The role involves delivering hands‑on support with CPAP/NIV therapy, conducting sleep study setups, managing patient queries, and troubleshooting compliance issues both remotely and face‑to‑face.
They maintain high standards of patient care through education, reassurance, and problem‑solving, supporting consultants in outpatient clinics and contributing to the smooth running of daily service operations.
Alongside clinical duties, the post holder manages administrative tasks such as booking appointments, maintaining accurate patient records, infection control compliance, and equipment processing. They are responsible for prioritising their own workload, supporting national waiting time targets, and ensuring adherence to Trust policies and procedures.
The role includes ongoing professional development, participation in audits and training, and supporting new staff. Flexibility is required, with potential cover for twilight or night shifts to support overnight polysomnography services.

Clinical & Technical Responsibilities
· Support clinical staff with patient-facing tasks including mask fitting, CPAP education, polysomnography setup, bio‑calibration, and patient discharge with CPAP.
· Manage the technician phone line and email inbox, responding to patient queries and prioritising urgent cases.
· Assist in reviewing patients in person, by phone, or email to monitor progress and treatment compliance.
· Offer reassurance and support to distressed patients and encourage adherence to therapy.
· Apply basic knowledge of airway anatomy and CPAP function to help patients understand their diagnosis and therapy.
· Support consultants in clinic by retrieving compliance data and offering CPAP advice.
· Monitor remote compliance data, troubleshooting simple issues and escalating when needed.
· Independently size and adjust CPAP masks and provide education on cleaning, maintenance, leak prevention, and avoiding skin breakdown.
· Check, clean, reissue, and document actions for returned equipment.
· Prepare inpatient rooms for sleep studies and take patient observations (weight, BP).
· Perform capillary blood gases and phlebotomy when requested.
· Potential to cover twilight or night shifts to wire patients for overnight studies.
Clerical & Administrative Responsibilities
· Organise and prioritise own workload, reporting incomplete work.
· Maintain compliance records, infection control standards, and cleaning logs.
· Book outpatient appointments and update patient notes, PAS, and databases accurately.
· Record consumables issued to patients and troubleshoot common patient issues independently.
Planning & Organisation
· Follow Trust and local protocols.
· Monitor stock levels and request orders when needed.
· Work with the service team to meet national waiting time targets.
Training & Development
· Continuously develop knowledge in sleep disorders and CPAP therapy.
· Participate in appraisals, training sessions, audits, and mandatory training.
· Train new staff members and contribute to departmental meetings.
Professional Responsibilities
· Maintain up-to-date mandatory training, adhere to local policies, and identify personal development needs.
· Participate in annual appraisal and pay progression processes.
