Job summary

Bhuku Ltd is recruiting a Peer Mentor Literacy & Numeracy Tutor to deliver a specialist, trauma-informed programme at HMP Maidstone.

This role focuses on supporting prisoners with very low literacy and numeracy levels, including those where English is a second language, by developing and supervising a peer mentor workforce.

You will deliver a programme that combines direct support with the training and development of peer mentors, helping to reach learners who are often disengaged from traditional education.

You will deliver a structured programme that supports learners and peer mentors to

Improve literacy and basic numeracy skills

Build confidence and engagement in learning

Support learners with English as a second language

Develop mentoring, communication and support skills

Promote positive behaviours and a culture of learning

You will also

Deliver small group sessions and 1:1 support

Provide structured supervision and development for peer mentors

Deliver non-accredited mentoring training (Level 2 equivalent)

Support learners to build Education, Skills and Training portfolios

Facilitate peer mentor networking and development sessions

Track learner and mentor progress and maintain records (including NOMIS updates)

Contribute to monthly reports and quality assurance processes

Delivery will take place across the prison in a flexible format, including group work, 1:1 sessions and in-cell support materials.

Working pattern

Monday to Thursday

08:00 – 17:00

11-month fixed-term contract

Delivery will align with prison regime times and operational requirements.

Person specification

Essential

Experience delivering literacy, numeracy or ESOL support

Experience delivering training, mentoring or personal development programmes

Strong communication and facilitation skills

Ability to engage learners with low confidence and complex needs

Ability to work within a secure environment and follow procedures

Willingness to complete prison vetting and induction

Desirable

Experience working in a custodial or secure setting

Teaching, training or coaching qualification

Experience supporting ESOL learners

Experience working with peer mentors or peer-led programmes

Knowledge of neurodiversity and inclusive learning strategies

Skills and experience

You will be

Confident delivering both 1

1 and small group sessions

Skilled in supporting learners with low literacy and language barriers

Able to train and support peer mentors effectively

Organised and able to track learner progress and outcomes

Professional, resilient and adaptable in a secure environment

Additional information

This role is based in a foreign national prison with a diverse population and varying literacy levels
