About this role

Your new company

We are actively working in partnership with a Local Authority in the East Midlands to recruit a Payroll Adviser to join their Human Resources team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to become part of a supportive and collaborative team, helping to deliver an accurate, efficient and customer-focused payroll service to a large and varied workforce.

Your new role

As Payroll Adviser, you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of multiple payrolls, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time. You will maintain payroll records, process payroll changes and undertake manual calculations where required, while ensuring compliance with PAYE, National Insurance and other statutory requirements. The role will involve administering statutory payments including maternity, paternity, adoption and sick pay, as well as managing pension-related documentation and liaising with relevant stakeholders.

You will act as a point of contact for managers and employees, providing advice and guidance on payroll matters and resolving payroll queries in a professional and timely manner. The position will also support payroll reporting, reconciliations and the production of management information, while contributing to service improvement initiatives, payroll projects and system development. Working closely with HR colleagues, you will play an important role in supporting organisational change and ensuring payroll processes remain effective, compliant and customer focused.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will have previous experience working within a busy payroll environment and possess a strong understanding of payroll legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, pensions and statutory payments. You will have excellent attention to detail, strong numerical skills and the ability to manage a varied workload while working to strict deadlines.

You will be confident communicating with employees, managers and external stakeholders, providing clear advice and resolving queries effectively. Strong IT skills and experience using payroll and HR systems are essential, along with the ability to produce reports and work with payroll data. Experience within a local government or public sector payroll environment would be advantageous, although applications from experienced payroll professionals from other sectors are also welcomed.

What you'll get in return

In return, you will receive a competitive hourly rate and the opportunity to work within a respected Local Authority environment. The role offers a supportive team culture, valuable public sector experience and the chance to contribute to a service that makes a real difference. Hybrid work may be available, and there is the potential for the assignment to be extended depending on business requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional seeking their next challenge and available to start at short notice.
