About this role

In this role, you will be responsible for the organisation and co-ordination of day-to-day activities within maternity services by effective utilisation of resources. This includes prioritising the care needs of women and birthing people and appropriately allocating staff maintaining a safe service in all areas.

You will be

  • acting as a role model promoting and maintaining high standards of maternity care within the department
  • proactively contributing to the support and development of all grades of staff within the multidisciplinary team by providing professional clinical guidance and advice
  • supporting the Head of Midwifery and matrons in the execution of their role.

Interview date

1. Oversee daily service delivery by identifying operational constraints and proactively redeploying resources to meet changing service demands. Visit all maternity areas, engaging with ward co-ordinators to review and communicate the maternity unit’s current OPEL status. Confirm planned versus actual staffing levels, planned admissions and discharges, bed capacity and availability, and identify any high-risk safeguarding or complex medical cases requiring escalation or additional support.

2. Liaise with the community ‘helicopter’ to receive an overview of community staffing levels and homebirth cover as necessary.

3. Manage beds capacity and demand on the maternity unit, improving flow, initiating use of midwifery led discharge criteria to secure the most efficient use of bed space, whilst ensuring high quality, appropriate care is maintained.

4. Liaise with Senior Midwives and Managers across the Maternity Department, as appropriate, to ensure delivery of a smooth and comprehensive service, allowing maximum participation and choice for women.

5. Hold the maternity sickness phone and take the Maternity Patient safety co-ordinator role on alertive.

6. Escalate any concerns according to the Maternity escalation policy and the Regional Opel escalation procedure. Liaise effectively with the Ward Manager or Maternity Matron, highlighting areas of concern in a timely fashion and taking action where appropriate to reduce concern.
