Is this for you?

This role is for you if you are completing your Primary PGCE or BA with QTS in summer 2026 — at the University of Brighton, Sussex, Chichester, or any other provider. If you want real independent classroom experience before committing to one school permanently, or if you simply need income between qualifying and starting your ECT year, we would love to hear from you.

What supply teaching looks like for a newly qualified teacher

Here is the honest picture, from a Brighton agency that has been supporting newly qualified teachers in Sussex primary schools since 2007.

Supply teaching as a new teacher is not the sink-or-swim experience people sometimes describe. The lesson plans are already written. Your job is to deliver them, manage the room, mark the work and leave a brief handover note. No marking pile, no planning load, no performance management meetings.

What you do get is genuine classroom independence across different year groups, schools, and communities. Most first-year ECT teachers do not experience until their second or third year. By September, you will know exactly what kind of school you want to work in permanently.

One of our most confident first-year ECTs spent her final six weeks of PGCE doing supply with us across three different Brighton schools. She later told us it was the best career decision she made.

What the role involves

You will be delivering pre-planned lessons across EYFS, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2, managing the classroom, and developing your behaviour management confidence in a real, independent setting. You will work in primary schools close to where you live across Sussex, leaving clear and brief handover notes for the class teacher at the end of each day. You will finish on time with no evening admin and no planning obligations.

You choose which days you are available. We match you to appropriate schools. We do not place newly qualified teachers in challenging environments without discussion and support.

Pay and contract

The daily rate is £100 for qualified primary teachers with QTS, paid weekly via PAYE. Income tax and National Insurance are deducted correctly before you receive your pay. There are no umbrella companies, no hidden deductions, and no complex self-assessment surprises at the end of the year. You work between one and five days per week — completely your choice, fitted around any other commitments. Nest pension auto-enrolment applies after three months of service.

Working four days a week for six weeks at £100 a day equals £2,400 before the summer holidays. Working five days a week, that rises to £3,000. The average PGCE maintenance loan instalment is around £500 to £700 per month. Six weeks of supply comfortably exceeds that — and unlike your bursary, this income continues for as long as you want to work.

Why ECTs / newly qualified teachers choose

Sussex Teachers

We look after new teachers properly. We have placed newly qualified teachers in Sussex primary schools since 2007 and we know which schools are welcoming and supportive of new teachers. We match you carefully, not randomly.

You speak to one consultant, not a call centre. You deal with the same person every time. If anything goes wrong on a placement, you have a direct number for someone who knows your name and your situation.

You work around your life. Choose the days that suit you; around results days, job interviews, university requirements, or anything else. Supply is flexible by design.

Free CPD is included as standard. All registered teachers receive CPD-certified Safeguarding and Child Protection in Schools training, and Prevent training. Both are required for your ECT induction, we provide them free of charge.

There is never a finder's fee. If a school offers you a permanent role after working with them, we will never charge you or the school a penny. We want you to find the right job, even if that means you stop working for us.

We cover local schools only. We work across Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, and West Sussex. We know these schools from the inside. We will not send you somewhere unsuitable.

What you need to register

You should be completing your PGCE or BA with QTS in summer 2026. You do not need your QTS confirmed before starting your registration with us. You will need an enhanced DBS certificate. We will advise on the fastest route if you need a new one. You will need two professional references, including your final placement school and University.

Register now, before you qualify. DBS checks and references take time. If you start the process today, you will be ready to work the week your QTS comes through. Most newly qualified teachers who register with us are placed within one week of qualifying.
